The 8 best Cottages in Honduras, Honduras

May 2, 2023 Vergie Nakamoto

Laid-back, low-profile Honduras is one of Central America's largely unknown tourist destinations. A recent proliferation of domestic flights has opened up the Bay Islands and the major cities of La Ceiba, Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Buses, taxis and dug-out canoes provide other transport options. The Maya city of Copan is a UNESCO-designated heritage site with a ball court, an Acropolis and a Hieroglyphic Stairway. Other sights include El Cusuco National Cloud Forest Park, home to quetzal birds.

St Mac’s beachfront - a tale of 2 cities

Reviewed By barata

On our 3rd visit to Roatan I decided to splurge and book this apartment for our first week. Like many folks I had admired it on our previous visits as the location on West Bay is perfect - steps to snorkelling, convenient to the many restaurants on West Bay, cute beach house with all the necessities - blender, toaster, dishwasher - but who cooks on vacation? :) It is also the most expensive accommodation in the area. We decided it’s not really worth it, especially since our 2nd week on Roatan was spent in West End at a fraction of the cost at an ocean front accommodation that supplied more than one bar of soap, had daily maid service, air conditioning was free and staff was on hand should we need anything at all. We loved the location, steps to face in the water snorkelling, no need to wear any kind of shoes or sandals when going out for lunch or dinner, unless you need to go to the ‘mall’, a bit of a barrier between you and the vendors. Unfortunately the outdoor furniture was lacking, shared with guests from the other village occupants rather than having our own dedicated furniture. We each got a couple of ‘bites’ from some broken plastic chairs. Security was wonderful, those guys are great and we always felt safe leaving our windows open to fall asleep to the sounds of the sea. The property managers never once checked on us - I guess it was up to us to e-mail them about lack of soap etc. Would have been nice for them to pop by to see how we were doing. I understand St Mac’s has been sold, so perhaps the new owners will do some renovations - replace broken screens, add some hooks in the bathroom, fix the damage caused by the salt air...until then I would save my money and go elsewhere. Also, if you book, be aware that an a/c charge is automatically added to your bill, whether you use the a/c or not. We never used it and they would not refund the charge. The place we stayed on our previous visit added the a/c charge AFTER, once we confirmed the a/c had been used. It is a nice location but terribly overpriced for the service you don’t receive.

Great visit, loved the cocoa trail

Reviewed By Ingrid F

We visited this lovely eco-park to learn more about cocoa. We're a family living in Switzerland and we wanted to show our kids (ages 10 and 7) the origin of cocoa and how it grows only in tropical regions. They love chocolate but know only the end product and not much about the cocoa plant. So we headed here following the "Ruta del Cacao". This visit was far beyond our expectations. We saw almost the entire farm, guided by Mr. Martinez, who is the owner of the farm and an expert on cocoa and artisanal chocolate-making. We saw all types of trees, not only cocoa but also native hardwood trees and fruit trees like cashew, guava and the pepper plant. He also showed us the entire process of making artisanal chocolate. The kids could grind cocoa beans in a traditional stone, just like the Mayas did! After this very interesting and informative session, we could all taste the chocolate. After the tour we all took a swim in the pools-- these are not your "normal" pools, but natural pools (or ponds) of fresh mountain water, surrounded by tropical vegetation. It was fascinating! We could also try local dishes prepared in the Café and buy the chocolate made by Mr. Martinez. Finally, a bit of adventure... there's the possibility of doing a canopy tour. You fly over the ponds, it was a lot of fun! I highly recommend this place. The access is through about 5 km of "off road", or dirt-road as it's known in Honduras. Don't be discouraged, the road is still OK for almost all types of vehicles. It's worth it-- you'll arrive in a beautiful place in the middle of the most lush, amazing, tropical vegetation!

Dog sitter for 3 weeks at the cottages...

The cottages are comfy and well equipped. Loved the hanging twin bed while watching boats go by. Be sure and make arrangements for boat to come get you often so you can see more of the island and perfect beaches. We enjoyed sunsets, going into town and meeting the friendliest people on our planet. My hubby did the scuba thing several times a week. They would drop me off on a secluded pristine beach and then head out on a dive. I snorkeled w tons of fish and colorful coral. Fishing was good as well. Sea grass several places so look for sandy areas. It won't hurt you, I just don't care for it. Take Deet as the biting bugs love you. She has a good dock, lots of flowers. Owner will help set up anything you might need. She knows who to call. We mainly used Messenger or wifi calling. Don't try to upload pics or streaming videos, as you'll lose connection for a day. Hard to get to and not a touristy place but well worth some inconviences to enjoy the natural beauty.

Serenity Beach Cottages

8 weeks of paradise

Reviewed By AuntBug

Serenity Beach Cottages are awesome! We stayed in The Dolphin House for 8 weeks and missed it the minute we left. 2 bedrooms and 1 bath was perfect for the friends and family who came to visit. The kitchen was a good size for cooking for groups of people we met while in Utila. These cottages are away from town and are boat access only, which makes it quiet and a nice escape from the busy “city” life. Make sure to bring a couple good backpacks to help transport groceries and a cooler bag for your frozen items. The a/c was a big plus for those evenings where the humidity was high. The amenities in these cottages have been thoroughly thought out which makes it an easy transition for your vacation. It’s more like a home away from home than a cottage. Well done Cheri and Derick. Can’t wait to get back to Utila. Love you guys!,

Hotel muy recomendable

Reviewed By luishh52
