Kurashiki Yuga Onsen Hotel Santoka

Great Onsen and Service

Reviewed By Pengapa

This is more like a hotel with hot spring rather than a ryokan. We stayed here on a weekday during an off season period so the place was pretty much deserted and we almost had the hotel to ourselves. The baths, both indoor and outdoor, were great and it was fantastic to take a bath on my own in a big bathtub. The food was very good. They serve Japanese breakfast but you can also have bread and coffee. What is great about this place is they provide a lift to stations, Kojima and Kurashiki. We had quite a bit of time at the Kojima station and so we decided to catch a train to the other side of Seto Ohashi and come back, using our Kansai Wide Pass. You get a great view from the train. Next day, we got a lift to the Kurashiki station. This made it possible for us to visit 'Bikan' area in Kurashiki before moving onto Himeji to look at the castle. Overall, we enjoyed staying here although I cannot tell what it is like when it is busy.

This was a very lovely Ryokan located just next to the canal in the historic town of Kurashiki. We reserved the car park and we drove there. The road was very narrow and so make sure you rent a smaller car as you will not able to turn into the car park. Which is behind the hotel. The town was very charming and it was like going back to 300 years ago when the hotel was built. We had the room that comes with a bath and toilet and also they have reserved a private bath for us to use all the time. Dinner was served in the room and using local delicacies and we could not be more happy. Breakfast also was lovely japanese style breakfast . What we loved was also the hospitality of the hotel. We will definitely come back again.

Lovely traditional small Ryokan experience - staff, meals, setting

Reviewed By gmbklm

+ Lovely traditional Ryokan + Very attractive wooden buildings and Japanese garden + Very charming, friendly and attentive owner & staff + We effectively had own little house with own toilet & dining room. Lots of space + Very nice separate wooden onsen bathhouse used on a family basis (by both of us at the same time) which we much prefer. Only 5-6 rooms, so never busy. + Extremely good multi-course Kaiseki dinner each evening and lovely Japanese breakfasts not to be missed. Some of the best meals of the holiday. + So very nice after having an onsen, to sit in your Yukata, watching life in the garden, having a lovely breakfast. Every day, they very kindly wrote out an English translation of everything they could on the menu. + Strongly recommended for a relaxing couple of days to enjoy a very good traditional small Ryokan experience, a little bit away from the main tourist path. - Initially seemed a bit awkward to get to, but in practice was very simple, and more than compensated for by the overall very enjoyable experience - 10mins / Yen c1300 taxi from Shin-Kurashiki station. Big taxi rank, & all knew Bingoya. Ryokan called us taxis in the morning, or took us. Shin-Kurashiki has 5-6 Local trains / hour to Kurashiki (10mins), and is on the Shinkansen for longer trips - not enough clothes storage cupboards / hangers, but thats normal everywhere. we were travelling for 4 wks, so had a lot. - A personal thing, I’m not super keen on aircon based heating

Reasonably Good Value

The pleasant hotel is on the beach and has nice views of Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi Bridge. The staff are nice though it is a little tired because of low occupancy and thus low revenue in the off season. The view blockers need to be removed from the women’s baths — you can’t see the great view (I am told). No stores nearby — you need to drive to the fishing village (which has no stores) or stores in Kojima. The gift shop should sell snacks, at minimum. It is also a bit of a drive to ferries to Naoshima, Shodoshima or Teshima, though the scenery both along the water and in the mountains is quite nice. Driving over to the old buildings in Kurashiku and the adjacent Ohara Museum, as well as the Nozaki House in Kojima, are highly recommended.

Central location; very nice stay; so-so dining experience

Reviewed By KI-NRT

We stayed two nights at Ryokan Kurashiki. The property is famous throughout Japan and is highly regarded, so we went in expecting a a memorable time there. With a few exceptions, it met our expectations. The ryokan is centrally situated along the main canal in the Kurashiki Bikan historical quarter, right along the bend of the river and right in front of the Nakabashi Bridge. While Kurashiki is a rather touristy place, it's gorgeous, authentic and filled with interesting sights. It's not a sprawling tourist area, so 1 full day may suffice for those who enjoy blitzing through various tourist spots. We wanted to take it a bit slow and thorough, so 2 nights was just right for us. The building of the ryokan is historic and well preserved, and exhibits an old-world charm that is appropriate for the area it's located in. Inside is much of the same - it's beautifully appointed with Meiji-era antiques and furnishings, all in darned good shape. We chose to stay in the Luxury Suite Inui, a room located on the 2nd floor of a stand-alone building just across the rear garden of the main building, and a sufficiently spacious 63.1m² in size. We selected this Suite because it appeared to be the newest of the rooms, with the most modern appointments. While we did not get to see the other rooms in the property, we felt a bit cheated in one respect... it was the only room where they didn't offer the option of being served meals in the room. Ryokan Kurashiki does not note this fact online. When I asked why they didn't offer it for guests staying at Inui, they said that the stairs were too steep for the servers to continually bring food to the room - they consider it a hazard. While we can't argue with that, we definitely wished we were made aware of this limitation in advance, as part of what makes a great ryokan stay is the ability to dine in the comfort of one's room. The Inui Suite itself was what we expected it to be, for the most part. it was bright, airy and thoroughly modern. It was far from the largest Suite we've stayed at, but the vaulted ceilings and the light-colored wood gave the room an airy feel. One minor nitpick: there was only one sink, which is unusual for a ryokan of Kurashiki's caliber. One other thing to note: there is no Onsen (hot spring bath) in the room; your only choice is to pay a visit to a small Onsen bath in a separate facility that is on premise. Meals (especially the dinners) were generally of high quality. We enjoyed the vast majority of dishes, which were well presented although not particularly innovative - it was straightforward Kaiseki fare, and what they offered was more than satisfactory. Breakfast, on the other hand, was a bit lacking. The portions were on the small side, and the variety of dishes was less than what we're accustomed to from our stays at other luxury ryokans. But the big irritation with our dining experience had to do with the service itself. We were assigned the same waiter for each meal, which is good... if only he was more knowledgeable and passionate about his work. We were very disappointed in his inability to thoroughly and deeply explain each dish that was served. When you consider that Kaiseki meals are elaborate affairs with tons of little dishes that contain a bountiful of ingredients, there is absolutely no way that a printed menu can do it justice. Not to mention, some courses consist of 5 or more little plates, each containing a wide variety of ingredients. I want to know all about them. On multiple occasions, when we asked about some of the food, he grabbed the hand-written menu that was on our table, and read it out loud. Umm, we can read, too... we expect more than what's written, in a way that's not unlike a connoisseur would like to enjoy fine wine - you don't just read the label and call it a day. You need to dive deep. You need to tell a story. Kaiseki dining is about as much about being educated and delighted, not just about eating good food. If the executive chef is truly proud of his/her creations, I would like to think that he/she and the ryokan management would have the wherewithal to train the servers about the intricacies of each dish. That's what top ryokans do. Ryokan Kurashiki, unfortunately, does not, and it really detracted from our experience. If this doesn't matter to you, then Kurashiki more than fits the dining bill. If ever we were to return to the area, we wouldn't hesitate to try out Ryokan Kurashiki once more. But, we would definitely choose a different room, and let them know in advance that we wish to be served by someone who is a veteran and who is knowledgeable, passionate about food, and well versed in explaining each dish that is intended to be served - in detail.

We spent 3 nights at this wonderful ryokan in Kurashiki, using it as a home base for visiting other places in the area. Located right in the heart of the old district, it was delightful to walk the streets in the evening after all the tourists had left. Service was impeccable - loved the Japanese breakfasts. After our first night dinner, we were consulted about what kind of meals we would like our other 2 nights (we chose a hotpot meal and a grilled meal). We took two of the meals in our room but, because of its nature, the hotpot meal had to be in one of the private dining rooms. All were fabulous and beautifully presented. We were given samples of different sakes before choosing the one we preferred. They were all good choices. The staff were lovely - because we spoke no Japanese, management made sure there was someone on hand who could communicate with us, which was outstanding. They were wonderful in assisting us organize our travel on our day trips to Naoshima and Hiroshima. Our room was comfortable and quiet and the bath divine. I would come and would highly recommend anyone choose this ryokan when in the area.

I left my passport behind!

Reviewed By KIMFOONG

After handing over my passport for the hotel to make copy and do registration, I forgotten to take it back from them and they, too, forgotten to return it to me. By the time, I have already checked out the next day and departed to another location. When I realized, I was hundreds of miles away! Suffice to say, they were very relieved when my friend contacted them about the matter and they quickly courier it to my friend. Thank you for a great and responsible service! The hotel itself is in a great location, so near to the train station and there are amenities and food around. Small room but clean and comfortable. Thumbs up!
