Amman's layered history is reflected in its diverse people and its varied architecture. Home to numerous churches and mosques, the city is home to a multidenominational and multicultural population. Even within the midst of the ultra-modern commercial center of the city there is evidence of its ancient roots, with colorful ancient souks, Roman ruins, cultural museums and monuments painting a picture of the history of the region.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Jordan and wish we had more than 3 days there. For our 3dars tour (2days Amman, 1 day dead sea), Our tour guide, was excellent and really made our trip memorable. He was informative, attentive and a really nice guy. Highly recommend the tour and thanks again Lilas Tours.

Step back 2,000 years in time with a visit to the ruins of this imposing amphitheater, which once held 5,000 spectators, and is still used today for theater and entertainment.
This is a must-see in downtown Amman, enjoy the theater, have some amazing pictures, and make sure to visit the museum inside, then enjoy a meal and a dessert in downtown.

This archaeological landmark features remnants from several different cultures.
We were fortunate to arrive at the citadel about 40 mins before sunset which meant we had the most atmospheric experience watching the sunset over Amman while the birds flocked to roost, with the call to prayer playing out from the Mosque. The citadel is a real land mark sitting high above Amman so the views are spectacular over the city. The Roman amphitheater is close by, but if you don't get time to go there you get a good view of it from here. THe site itself is of great archeological importance with Roman remains ( Hercules Temple) , and those of the Palace and church. AT 2JD , this is a must when visiting Amman.

The Temple of Hercules is justly one of the many ruins to see when you do a walking tour of the old Citadel on one of Amman’s highest hills. If you choose to walk up to the Citadel then the hill climbing will test your fitness, but it is worth the climb. Alternatively you can get a very cheap taxi ride up from the old part of Amman. The Temple is worth seeing but so is the rest of the amazing fortress. Don’t forget to check out the museum when you are there. They have a wonderful collection of antiquities from Amman and other parts of Jordan.

This castle does not disappoint and it was a true shelter from a severe dust and wind storm. It is an Umayyad castle from the 8th century and once inside has been somewhat renovated. The owner of the land on which it stands is in the Bedouin tent next door. Very hospitable and try the chai tea.

This amazing site is a little off the beaten track but we'll worth the drive. My husband and I were the only ones there on a warm February afternoon. There is no entrance fee, the guard is helpful & opened up a video viewing room for us to watch a short graphic design film made by the French Archaeological team who excavated & reconstructed the site, it really helped our untrained eye see the full glory of the villa/palace. The building is a marvel & wonder of engineering, determination & sheer strength; the lion, panther & eagle carvings on the exterior walls are highlights. The drive & setting are beautiful too.
