The historic Opera House stands tall and proud in the heart of downtown Sumter, South Carolina and is known as one of Sumter’s Crown Jewels. Through the years this great building has served a number of purposes and has seen a great deal of change. In 1987 with the reopening of this building, its past is remembered as its future is celebrated.

My husband and I have lived in Sumter for a little over a year now and we finally caught a show at the Sumter Opera House. It was easy to purchase tickets through their website. There is plenty of parking in the lot behind the Opera House and it's near a few really good local restaurants. I thought the building was beautiful with lots of great details. Seats were comfortable and I'm convinced there isn't a bad seat in the place. Definitely come check it out sometime!

Palmetto Park

Reviewed By ChristyLouJohnson - Sumter, South Carolina

Very nice park for younger children. The playground equipment is well maintained. They just opened a splash pad which is an absolute joy during the summer. There are benches in the shade near the splash pad but the splash pad itself is not under the shade. Make sure to take plenty of sunscreen. If you are the first person at the splash pad you have to press the button to get the water to turn on. The park is not over crowded but at the same time there are plenty of children for your children to play with. Park was not dirty and bathrooms were nice. There is a small sidewalk inside of the playground that the children can draw on with chalk. Also a fun place to take some bubbles. Several picnic tables if you want to bring lunch. I have seen people bring beach/camping chairs for around the splash pad which is a brilliant idea. There are only two picnic tables at the splash pad and the ground can get too wet for just laying down a towel on the grass.

One of Sumter's classic, downtown great houses has been adapted to home the county's museum. Pretty much a typical, local, small-town museum, besides the usual displays, it also boasts relocated, old buildings in the back yard for larger items such as farm implements, a weaving loom and blacksmith shop, hand-carved boats and many historical artifacts. If you love museums, you'll feel right at home and happy at this one. Two to three hours are enough. Thanks for the hospitality!

Battle of Dingle Mill Marker

Reviewed By jlantern3 - Columbia, South Carolina

This is a small skirmish spot. Easy to find, located south of Sumter. This skirmish which was part of Potters Raid is maintained quite well. The info board gives a good background of the path Potter took on his raid. The graves of three Union soldiers are on the property. Also old cannons and monuments are placed around the property. This is a nice stop for history buffs. While there aren't a lot of battle grounds around South Carolina, this one is worth a stop.
