Kokosing Gap Trail

Reviewed By David R - Ada

My wife and I enjoy the rails to trails network and have ridden on several of the bike paths in Ohio. So far, I would rate this section as our favorite! The all asphalt path starts in Mt. Vernon and goes along the Kokosing river for much of the way and ends at Danville. It is also connected to other bike paths if you want a longer ride. Highlights include the Kenyon college town of Gambier, as well as Howard and Danville. If you want a nice little coffee stop, Gambier has one in the small village accessible by climbing a nice hill on bike. It is a little challenge going up, but not bad, and the ride back down is a nice treat. I highly recommend Whit's frozen custard which is located next to the trail connector end in Mt. Vernon across the street from the train station parking lot near where State route 13 crosses the Kokosing river.

Schnormeier Gardens

This private home and the beautiful Asian gardens with a tea room and other quaint settings are indeed a rare find. I have had the opportunity to visit on several different occasions and even volunteered for one of their events. Take advantage of the annual opening which usually occurs each spring. It is well worth the drive if you are not local.

Please keep in mind this is a private home and is not open for impromptu visits.

Ariel-Foundation Park

The folks that created this park were visionary. The park is a converted glass factory site with parts re-utilized in the park. Make sure to view the River of Glass. There is a small museum with local history and explaining park creation; it is well-worth a stop but has limited hours. You can meditate, walk or exercise. The designer included several terraced mounds from which to view the park - and to climb. Plan at least an hour. If you want to bring lunch you can spend the whole day.

Chapel Hill Golf Club

Reviewed By Jim H - Westerville, Ohio

Full disclosure – the foursome that I golf with likes to play golf for the fun of playing golf. We look for nice well-maintained courses but at the same time, we look for affordable courses. We don’t play many of the higher end / highly manicured courses but generally stick with the smaller but still well managed and well maintained courses.

Chapel Hill Golf Course opened in 1996 on the site of the former Mount Vernon Bible College. The original Chapel that once served as a place of worship now serves as a rather unique clubhouse. The clubhouse offers typical golf course fare – hot dogs, chips, pop, beer, etc. Rates are generally affordable with weekday rates of $23 walking / $35 w/ a cart and weekend rates of $30 walking / $42 w/ a cart.

Although we generally try to “walk” most courses, this is one course where we usually rent carts. The up and down elevations that make the course challenging also make it a long and challenging course to walk. If playing Chapel Hill for the 1st time, I’d strongly recommend using a cart. Then you can make your own decision on your next round.

Knox County Historical Museum

Reviewed By Porthos7 - West Chester, Ohio

Neat little county museum which has plenty of local history and a little something for everyone! Paul Lynde was from the town, and they have a nice little section (including a beautiful car he owned) on his life. So much to see - no "one" type of exhibit. From frocks, to rocks, to cars, to computers, to a large stained glass window from a church, to steam powered tractors, to antique toys... the list goes on. Go and support this museum - plenty to see and very knowledgeable docents!
