What a surprise this was.....certainly not dull or staid or boring. Set out in different themes i.e.. School, doctor, shop....... The place was bursting with artefacts of the times and information to read. We spent ages there and were lucky enough to witness an old mining stamping machine working. The lady in charge was welcoming and informative. I would recommend a visit there if you can spare the time. Fantastic!

Mariposa Visitor Center is Run by the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce. We have The Official Yosemite Visitor Guide, Official Park Maps including Hiking Maps & Books as well as up to date information on Camping, Road Conditions, and Trail Closures. We are located at the corner of HWY 140 & 49 North only 45 Minutes from the Entrance of Yosemite National Park. Stop here first our staff will go over all of the information you need so that way you don't miss out on anything. This can also save you time since you don't have to go to the Yosemite Visitor center first and then try to find your way backwards to trailheads and viewpoints you may have already passed. We also have postcards & many fabulous books about yosemite and can help you with finding a place to stay or eat. We like to help optimize your experience. Come in and say Hello. We would love to meet you!
The lady working the counter at the visitor's center was so nice and very helpful. Coulterville is very small with only 119 residents, but rich in history in its own right. We got a map for a guided tour and was pleasantly entertained as we rode around this old town.

Specialty museum dedicated to the California gold mining industry.
Our Christmas trip started in Mariposa at the museum. It was pouring rain on 12/15 but we found the museum and headed inside to a welcoming employee. Our son filled out the questionnaire and was sworn in as a California State Park Junior Ranger. He had been studying about the California 49ers and so we decided to just go see it for ourselves, traveling up CA49! (Highly suggest!)
This museum is fascinating if you're a rock hound or if you just want to see how things worked back in the olden days of gold mining.
We were there for at least 2 hours, had a guided tour and purchased some really neat rocks.
The employee was super informative and told us about different specimens as well.
I would highly suggest you stop by here. It's inexpensive and worth your time!

Bob is a great storyteller and worth the visit. My only negative is his wine is better than his storytelling. The tasting room is small as is the gift shop but the wines surpass everything. While driving down a road that you think is taking you off the edge of the earth you find a simple tasting room with picnic areas and a winemaker that takes so much pride in his award winning wines you just sit and enjoy. It's worth the drive...

We walked around the entire outside of this building and marveled that anyone could ever have escaped from it, but we learned they had. It had very thick stone walls and few openings. Would have liked to see the inside.
