Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery

Reviewed By Athena53 - Kansas City, United States

My friend and I visited to see the grave site of his parents- Dad was a WW II veteran. The first time we couldn't find their marker and there was a blank space that he swore had been where it was. We wandered all over and were determined to come back (we're less than an hour away). There was a Grave Locator screen at the Visitor's Center (which was closed) and it wasn't working- they need to get that fixed! He got the info on-line and we found it this time- the stone had been removed for cleaning and was replaced, in the spot that was blank on our last visit. It's good to slow down and look at all the headstones- Christian, Muslim, Jewish- of all the service members buried there (with the name of an interred spouse, if any, on the other side). You remember that this is only a small segment of the people who served our country. We'll be back.

Memorial Chapel

Reviewed By Calmjohn - Leavenworth, United States

This beautiful stone building has been in constant use since 1878. It is reported that Gen Custer, his brother and some of their troop attended church here just before they went to Little Big Horn. The interior of the chapel is a must see. You can feel the history that has transpired as men readied for combat. There is a large Plaque inside dedicated to Gen Custer, Tom Custer and 4 other men who were killed at Little Big Horn. There are many other plaques adorning the walls of Civil War heroes and of men who helped tame the West. If you walk around back of the chapel you will find a wonderful view of the Missouri River. Religious services are held in this chapel every Sunday. If you visit Fort Leavenworth I strongly advise you take some time to see this historic and beautiful building.
