Best attraction for Birdwatching, Kayak, Fishing and Eco-Tours. Bigi Pan is a protected MUMA (Multi Use Management Area) on the North Coast of Nickerie and Coronie District, Suriname, South-America. This place is one of the breeding places of the Scarlet Ibis and other birds which you can see in their own habitat.
Best part was the boat trip to Bigi Pan on the Jamaer Kanaal and the way back. We saw Yellow Oriole, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Great Black Hawk, Black-collared Hawk, Egrets, Cocoi Heron, Yellow-headed Caracara, Groove-billed Ani and close by the lake the Red Ibis. On the way back we did saw a Southern Tamandua. On the lake are several lodges in the water. We did stay at Tante Gerda's Lodge and did sleep in a hammock with mosquito net (beds also possible). This place was and the food was basic but fine enough. After arrival we did a boat trip on the lake till sunset. We did saw pelicans, flying fishes and many red ibises. The sunrise was great. After breakfast there were not activities before going back. I consider Bigi Pan one of the best part of our 26 days Suriname trip.

Peperpot Nature Forest Foundation manages the natural wealth that arose after the end of the old Peperpot coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne. The area of approximately 820 hectares houses a unique ecosystem with a large variety of animals and plants, just 5 kilometers away from Paramaribo. Part of the area has been made accessible as a nature park that will be developed in the coming years with the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other partners into an important destination for nature education and recreation.
We rented bicycle and rode from Paramaribo to the Peperpot Reserve and had a lovely time. Nice, wide road to cycle on and several walking trails. Makes for a very nice outdoor activity.

Paramaribo is a superb city to explore the local people in their daily walks of life and the colonial Dutch heritage which made the inner city a UNESCO world heritage, the other side of the coin. It’s a true melting pot of people from various ethnicities! It’s a safe place, based on my experience!
