The 7 Best Things to do Good for Couples in Mazunte, Oaxaca

December 22, 2021 Karren Gelb

Mazunte is a small beach town on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca, Mexico (15°39′53″N 96°33′14″W / 15.66485°N 96.55388°W / 15.66485; -96.55388). It is located 22 km southwest of San Pedro Pochutla on coastal Highway 200. Mazunte is located some 10 km to the west of Puerto Angel and just about 1 km from San Agustinillo and 264 km south of the capital of Oaxaca. There are two etymologies for the name. Some sources state that “Mazunte” is derived from a Nahuatl phrase, “maxotetia” which means “please deposit eggs here.” However, older residents of the community state that it is from the word “mizontle,” used by locals to refer to a crab species that used to be very abundant in the area.

It's a small hike up to a marvelous sunset point. Well worth the climb. The scenery is a dream and sometimes there are people up there plying music. A definite plus.

We took the Lagune tour with a knowledgeable ‘red shirt’. Don’t know all the details about the 2 opposing groups red vs white. Just noticed as we were passing the white tour guide, the men didn’t greet one another. The boot tour was interesting and very relaxing. This was also the place to buy straw hats, honey, teas, chocolate etc. Bought refreshing Jamaica Alma Blanca tea leaves. Prices were very reasonable and good quality with the proceeds going back to the conservation effort. We also had Tlayuda,a typical Oaxacan filled tortilla at a tiny family run restaurant. Definitely worth a visit.

We loved Mazunte beach!! Our favorite day of the whole trip to the coast was spent on Mazunte Beach at a restaurant called Jalil. We were there from 10am to 6pm and so entertained and content the whole time. It's a hip little place and there are artists and vendors walking around selling their wares, and at one point two men dressed in colorful headdresses with shells on their ankles did a performance of traditional Aztec dances. The water was great for swimming and the sand was super soft. We would go back in a heartbeat.

This is not an action-packed attraction but WOW - if your timing is good, you can witness baby turtles being born right before your eyes, crawling out of their sandy nests & scrambling to get to the sea! It would be amazing to see the huge adult Ridley Sea Turtles haul themselves onto the beach to lay the eggs. It’s all about what time you & the turtles happen to be there. The area is under armed military guards (finally, a good use of military might!) and it is quite high security to protect the turtles & eggs. The workers here are deeply committed to their work and are more than happy to answer questions & tell you everything you could possibly want to know about sea turtles & other forms of local conservation. This is the kind of place I want to support with my tourism dollars! The trip was a lot farther from our hotel than we were originally told, but it was entirely worth it! If you love nature/animals, this is a must-do!
