Cradle Mountain

Reviewed By DeSignBoard_P - Melbourne, Australia

One of the most beautiful national parks in Tasmania, the Cradle Mountain National Park offers breath-taking views of the surrounding areas from numerous hiking trails spread throughout the national park. These hiking trails range from a couple of hours to a couple of days, depending on how adventurous you want to be. The most popular is the hike from Dove Lake to Marion's Lookout and back, which takes about 5 to 6 hours and includes a few difficult places to navigate. The park incurs entrance fees, either per person or per vehicle if you purchase a 24 hour or a 60 day parks pass. The 60 day parks pass would be the most economical if you are planning on visiting multiple national parks in Tasmania.

Marion's Lookout Walk

We actually stopped at Marion's lookout as part of the Overland track but the lookout hike makes a wonderful day hike as well. We started from Ronny creek in drizzle and by the time we reached Marion's lookout the sky was clearing and we got stunning views of Cradle Mtn, Dove Lake and vicinity. It's a great rest stop or place for a picnic. Families with young children can do the hike and we even witnessed a birthday party for a youngster while eating our lunch. You need a park pass but the day hike is free. Be sure to go prepared for all kinds of weather as we witnessed rapid changing weather.

The Overland Track

Reviewed By tessablazey - Melbourne, Australia

I just completed the guided, catered version of overland track (overnight hut accomodation) with The Tasmanian Walking Company and 12 members of my extended family including my 75 year old parents, my 15 year old teenage daughter and her 5 year old cousin, my siblings and their families. It was incredible! The landscape was wild and beautiful. Each day we experienced such interesting and diverse landscapes that varied from fog on the moors and high lakes to bright sunshine whilst swimming in local waterholes or heading up to the summit of Mt Doris through the "Japanese gardens" and up Mt Ossa. We were very grateful to be walking in the company of of three fantastically good humoured, professional and thoughtful guides, Silas, Carla and Mikael. It was a very memorable and meaningful family holiday that reconnected us and reminded us all for how precious and wonderful the natural world is.

I cannot rate this company highly enough if you are planning to hike the Overland Track. When planning our hike, our headache was working out the logistics of getting us to Cradle mountain and finishing up in Lake St Claire. What would we do with our other luggage, how would we get to Hobart 2 days after Xmas etc. These guys took care of everything. Picking us up on time from our hotel in Launceston, Andy who had done the track 13 times was a wealth of knowledge and gave us some really good tips and information about the hike. We hired our gaiters which were in really good condition, our PLB and bought gas for our stove from them. They are really well stocked up with pretty much anything you want to hire for the track. Our extra luggage was kept until we were picked up at Lake St Claire by Steve who brought us fresh apples from his orchard (can’t tell you enough how great they were after 6 days of hiking food) and drove us to Hobart. If you’re doing the overland track I highly recommend this company. They were amazing!! Thank you so much guys!

Cradle Country Adventures

Reviewed By Q8534IStimw - Buxton, Australia

We enjoyed a 2 day ride with Cradle Country Adventures at Bakers Beach. Our guide Barbara was not only an experienced horse woman she was very informative and a great conversationist. Pre ride safety briefings are comprehensive but tailored to the riders experience. Balancing the needs of learners, intermediates and experienced riders was an obvious objective of this trail ride & Barbara balanced this really well. Likewise the horses are clearly well looked after and we were perfectly matched to the horses provided. Our day 1 ride was the 3 hr bush ride where we climbed a nearby mountain range to take in the awesome views of the coastline and the surrounding Narawntapu National Park. That night was spent at the Bakers Beach Homestead which is not only very comfortable but full of character. Having a ‘sundowner’ on the front verandah gazing over the tidal flats and abundant native wildlife was a great reward after a few hours in the saddle. Full kitchen, hot shower, wood heater and comfy beds about a kilometre from the horse yards make this a perfect accommodation option if you need somewhere to stay after or between rides. Our day 2 ride was along Bakers Beach (another 3hrs) and again Barbara catered for the needs of all riders - with ample opportunity to canter or trot dependant on your riding ability. Bakers Beach is perfect for horse riding and (although close) this was our favourite of the two rides - can’t beat walking through the shallows on horseback or cantering along the low tide mark. Finally, Ray and Laura were excellent to deal with in the lead up to our booking and were very responsive to emails & phone calls - even helping us out with a last minute car rental disaster. If you are looking for an outdoor based activity we couldn’t recommend Cradle Country Adventures any higher and I have no doubt next time we’re back in Tassie we’ll pay another visit.
