Founded in 1565 by the Order of St John as a refuge for soldiers returning from the Crusades, Valletta is now the capital of Malta and a piece of living history. With an unsurpassed collection of original Baroque architecture, fortified city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the spectacular Co-Cathedral of St John, which features intricately carved stone vaults and a famed painting by Caravaggio, it is no wonder that this smallest of European capital cities is a world heritage site.

This state of the art building is spread over four floors and is not your typical Postal Museum. It offers a run through of Maltese history from the 15th century. The Museum also boasts of two temporary gallery spaces, a large audio-visual room and merchandising store. The temporary gallery spaces currently offer a collection of photographic prints by Richard Ellis, and what is arguably the finest collection of works by Emvin Cremona, regarded by many as one of the best Maltese artists of the 20th century.
It was an interesting day in the postal museum. It is a paradise for those who collects stamps. There is a huge number of stamps, of different themes and time periods. It is full of photos and screens with movies about historic events in the story of post in Malta. The lady on the reception offered an exciting quest for our kids. They were searching for the secret sing to solve a riddle. It was wonderful. And in the end we made a photo of our family like a stamp. A pleasant souvenir to remember the trip. Thanks a lot to the lady in the museum!

An innovative museum concept based on Augmented Reality, housed in one of the most iconic buildings in Valletta - The Sacra Infermeria. A visit to the museum will transport you back in time, whereby you can interact with the main characters and be part of history. A fun and educational experience for everyone.

St John's Co-Cathedral is situated just inside the Valleta walls, on the right. For €15 euros, you get a multi-lingual audio guide; that matches the numbered displays. The Cathedral has a lovely mosaic floor of people's tombs. You are directed left around the outer edges of the nave. Each section that you enter, has a portrait of an important figure; with statues either side of it. The main altar has a purple ribbon adorning it, and sits at the top end of the church. Marbelled inlain statues surround the place, with art work across much of the ceiling. A giant crucifix, hangs in the corner also in inlain marble. You can also go up the tower, which has 50+ steps; if you're feeling energetic enough.

The Museum exhibits a spectacular range of artefacts dating back to Malta’s Neolithic period (5000 BC) up to the Phoenician Period (400 BC). On display are the earliest tools used by the prehistoric people to facilitate their daily tasks and representations of animal and human figures; elements which not only show the great artistic skills of the first dwellers of the island but also gives us an insight of their daily lives. Highlights include the ‘Sleeping Lady’ (from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum), the ‘Venus of Malta’ (from Ħaġar Qim), bronze daggers (recovered from the Bronze Age layers at Tarxien Temples), the Horus & Anubis pendant and the anthropomorphic sarcophagus, both belonging to the Phoenician Period.
We found the Malta National Museum of Archeology an excellent start to our Malta trip. We saw it before we visited the Neolithic temples and this gave us a good background. The museum is small, with exhibits well set out and has some stunning pieces e.g. Venus statues, and exquisite small sleeping lady statue from the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and other large figures. Recommendation: visit first before you see the Neolithic temples

Being there is like going through a movie set, except all of this staff is for real. The level of craftsmanship and design of knights’s armor is incredible. My personal favorite is Milan-made haut couture armor of the Grand Master. Highly recommended.
