This is a stunning little bastide town. Pretty, nice shops (love the ceramics shop particularly), lovely cafes and an artisan gelateria.

After almost three weeks in Spain and France I had become particularly interested in the 100 Years War in the Dordogne area. We stayed in one "bastide" (beautiful Cordes-sur-Ciel), visited another (Domme) and probably were in others that we weren't aware would be classed as bastides. What we had not seen was the "classic" grid pattern. Monpazier was the perfect (and perfectly preserved) example of that. The town is simply beautiful and actually seems like a real, live town with people living and working in it, rather than primarily a tourist destination. Something like four of the original six (or six of the original eight - I forget which) gates are still in great shape. The streets are narrow and interesting and, as advertised, it's all in a perfect grid pattern. On the day we were there (late September) parking along a street a few blocks from the square was quite easy. The highlight is the very large central square. There is a covered area within the square and most of the four sides have a deep covered arcade in front of the buildings. It's all in a beautiful state of repair but none of it appears to be overly-remodelled. Such fun just to walk around, poke into the shops, and just marvel at the design of it all. There is a lovely church on the square as well. I've now seen the perfect bastide! It's a bit out of the way from other places we visited, but well worth the side trip. Don't miss this one.
