Welcome to Our Lady of Matara Shrine The venerated Shrine of Our Lady of Matara is enshrined in the one Church that stands facing the Indian Ocean in the city of Matara. The famed statue of Our Lady of Matara is taken in procession in a beautifully illuminated motor Chariot along the streets of the town.
Shrine of Our Lady of Matara is a Roman Catholic church devoted to the Virgin Mary, in the town of Matara, Sri Lanka. The shrine houses a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. Though the statue's origins are unknown, church officials claim that it is 400 years old. The statue has been damaged, lost and recovered more than once, most recently during the 2004 tsunami in Asia, which damaged the shrine and killed 24 people attending Sunday Mass. The church celebrated its centenary year in 2007.

The Paravi Duwa Temple in Matara is located off the Beach Road across what is known as Golden Island Pathway which is a short walk across a bridge to reach the Temple at sea. There are so many Temples in very scenic places in Sri Lanka but this is certainly one of the best for scenery and proximity to the great Indian Ocean. It is a small but nevertheless interesting Buddhist Temple where you will find peace and tranquility and have views of the sea and also of the town. The usual Temple dress code is required.
