Ingatestone Hall

Ingatestone Hall is a 16th century manor house, still owned and occupied by the Petre family who built it. It is open to the public for visits during the summer (Wednesday and Sunday afternoons) and is availiable for private hire (eg weddings and dinners) at other times.

Visited in late Aug 2020, and had a lovely tour around the property. It is ticketed entry due to Covid, so only small numbers at a time. We felt very safe. The staff were very well informed and friendly. Small café serving snacks, sandwiches and cakes, but nice food, and drinks. Beautiful gardens and grounds to walk around at leisure.

Mountnessing Windmill

Reviewed By 149stuartc - Rayleigh, United Kingdom

There is a free car park right by the windmill which is open one Sunday a month during summer. The mill is effectively in three levels with the brick level at the bottom. You have to climb the steep steps at the back to get up to where they ground the corn. There is a hand rail to help. The final level is up a ladder. The volunteers were so friendly explaining how it all worked and how the mill turned round. Also from the outside it’s very pretty to look at.

Calcott Hall

We had a lovely lunch in the restaurant, attended to by a very friendly staff. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. We then did shopping at the wonderful farm shop, wonderful produce in all departments. Nice little play area for children with seating outside which enables you to enjoy your meal whilst keeping an eye on the children at the playground.

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

Reviewed By littlerussell

This is a fascinating place to spend a couple of hours. The owners have managed ir very well - the place has been left much as it was, and you can wander around with little interference. There is no desk at the entrance, you just go in and pay on exit via an honesty box in the canteen. Each room displays equipment as it was in the 1980s, and the audio guide and videos are informative (although investing in a few TV screens rather than the faint projectors would be worthwhile). It wasn't busy, and that added to the atmosphere of the place. There are some nice touches, like the fridge of canned drinks part way through (again, with an honesty box). This is a period of history which is under-represented in other museums, and it was both educational and interesting. I disagree with some of the other comments which want to change this into a glossy museum - this is truly authentic and low key and should stay like that!
