Contrary to some reviews, the darshan was peaceful and hassle--free. We entered through the main entrance on a narrow lane and had a glimpse of the lord's idol in fifteen minutes. I learnt that Sundays and holidays are crowded here. Better to go on week days. The atmosphere is pious and calm. Dress code for men is in place.

The legend goes as when ravanan was returning back from himalayas with athma lingam the devas sent lord vina agar to get back the athma lingam from him as he has planned to go to Sri Lanka with it by tricking and making the noon time as an evening time so he would place the lingam down. Vinayagar went near him as a young boy and on seeing the boy ravanan requested him to hold the lingam in his hand till he finishes his evening santana vanthanam pujai and not to keep it down as it can't be taken back if placed anywhere on the earth, but Vinayagar said okay and the movement ravanan finished his pujai the boy placed the lingam down and tried to ran away but ravanan got angry and hit him on his head creating a mark. And that Vinayagar is the main deity of this temple and one can see a small hole on his head in the statue even today. Devotees are allowed inside the sanctum for Darshan, and to perform pujabhishekam themselves with the pujai guidance here. That very athmalingam that Vinayagar placed down is in a temple nearby and the lingam is worshipped as mahabaleswarar as ravanan tried to pull out the lingam but went vain and not being able to take out he exclaimed hair! Shiva!you are mahabala. ,I. e. ,shiva, you are so strong! So here shiva is mahabaleswarar.

This cave could be difficult for you to spot. Entering the cave could be scary if there are no people. It is an experience to get there. There are bats inside the cave and very often you may spot a saint meditating inside. I would recommend you to visit the place for the thrill.

The temple is so calm, clean and divine. The Amman is in standing posture decorated with flowers. The walls have murals of astadasa shakti with explanation of the experience with the shakthi. The calmness of the place brings divine within and is apt for meditation, which makes us not to leave the temple.
