The Shenvalee Golf Course

The Shenvalee Golf Course of New Market, VA features 27 PGA holes of golf on 3 separate 9 hole courses. It is one of the oldest continuously operating golf courses in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The Shenvalee is a mature course with spectacular mountain views, manicured greens and fairways, and hole designs that provide an enjoyable round for even the seasoned professional.

I've been wanting to play Shenvalee for many years but as I live several hours away, I just haven't made the time to do so. Until this past week. Several of us made the trip to play their 27 holes. We figured if we're going to make the effort, we might as well make the most of it! I usually play anywhere from 15-25 rounds a year. And so far, this year, I haven't seen a course this green, well manicured and just fun to play. There was not a damaged green over the entire course- even after the periods of drought and heavy rain we've had recently. They ran pretty fast and several were very soft, especially the par threes when the balls landed on them. Each fairway was immaculate. The cuts were very fair and didn't give us any unfair lies. The yardage is short. There are several par 4s you could drive. But the shortness of the yardage is met with some very interesting shaping of the course. There are several holes where the tee boxes and the greens are of different heights- some extreme. You need to constantly think of not just the yardage but the landing zone. Several holes have blind greens, such as you're hitting on a hill, with the green hidden down the other side. It makes for a challenging but very playable course if you're hitting accurately. Several of the fairways have blind doglegs which, again, are very fair if you hit accurately. The staff we interacted with were all very nice and pleasant to talk to. Price was great, especially if you play all 27. I'm definitely making the return trip. The three of us who played were just stunned at how much fun this course was.

Seven Bends State Park

This park is under construction and has no parking, restrooms or other facilities. Pedestrians are allowed during daylight hours. The park, which is in the geographically unique "seven bends" area of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, will provide access to the river's north fork once facilities are built.

Our goal is to visit every VA state park and we're almost there! We came here today for a nice little hike, to check out the river and to do some geocaching. Yes, the road in and out is a bit steep and backwoods, but that's what we love. We found a cool swinging bridge to walk across near the Muse vineyard. Just remember to move over as far as you can when passing another vehicle.
