The calm lake waters, the surrounded treed mountains and hills, the peaceful breeze, all add to the beauty of the Milford Sound area.

Bluff Hill

Reviewed By mgreaney2018 - Wellington, New Zealand

I loved the well planned spiral walkway to the look out with information boards on the way up. Beautiful vegetation and stunning views from the top. It was a clear blue sky when we were there and we seemed to be able to see forever.

Stirling Point

Reviewed By Voyager2020andBeyond - Wanaka, New Zealand

See what truly stops NZ from rejoining Australia and how far away we really are from anything. Our first day to explore the magnificent South Island took us on a drive from Wanaka to Bluff the longer way via Otago, through hills and valleys of Alexandra to Gore. Some beautifully stunning mountains and farms were passed too as we weaved our way south. Onward, toward the southern most town of the South Island. Bluff host oyster shucking competitions - in May (no oysters seen in December). The sign post lived up to its photographic iconic-ness! And there’s even a restaurant just there if you want! First experience of the South Island talkin’ loo (bathroom) too what a hoot! Disappear to the ends of ... NZ ... and see what Mariners of old would have - oceans tempestuously beating - or waves rolling in on a smooth rock shore.

Lake Hauroko

Reviewed By Gondwana80 - Wanaka, New Zealand

We travelled from Invercargill to Te Anau via the Southern Scenic route, and decided to add Lake Hauroko to our journey. The road in was well maintained and provided ease of access. The views from the lake shoreline were stunning. This really is one of this country’s lesser known hidden gems. The snow capped mountains, lush green Beech forests and deep dark still waters made for an unforgettable afternoon; a photographer’s dream. There is a short loop track just beyond the carpark (the sign says it takes 40 minutes, but it took us about half this time, so just take it slow and absorb the magic of this unique location). If time is limited and you’re choosing between Hauroko and Monowai, it really is a “no-brainer” - there’s simply no comparison. For us this lake was the jewel in the crown of the region and well worthwhile including it on our itinerary.

Curio Bay

Reviewed By CollRr - Auckland, New Zealand

Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay are unspoilt beaches in the Caitlin’s where there are yellow eyed penguins, dolphins and petrified forests to be seen. It is definitely worth spending at least one night here between Dunedin and Invercargill. Be sure to book accommodation ahead and take food with you or head to the pub in Tokanui for a meal, as the few restaurants and cafes run to their own schedules and may not be open when you arrive. We toured with Kim from Iconic Tours in his car from Dunedin through the Caitlin’s and saw and learned far more than we would have done had we driven ourselves.
