Johnston Ridge Observatory

A small observatory poised dramatically on a cliff overlooking the debris left over from the famous 1980 volcano explosion.

This visitor center is well appointed with a lot of interesting exhibits, movies, facts and stories surrounding the Mt St Helens 1980 erruption. It is well worth going to if you plan a visit to the area. The hiking trails are well marked, but out in the open and there are no water sources. Plan on bringing plenty of water.

Goldendale Observatory State Park

See within 1,100 miles of the moon's surface and Jupiter's cloud belts when looking through the amazing telescopes available to the public.

Went to the evening show, unfortunately it was a very foggy night and so we were not able to see anything through the telescope. Instead we had a very interesting 2 hour discussion on astronomy. The lecturer (I'm sorry I didn't catch his name) really knew his stuff and was good at explaining difficult concepts such as the angle of the earth's tilt in layman's terms, his knowledge of the solar system was impressive and he peppered the discussion with many interesting facts about the planets and their moons. The talk was enhanced by great graphics taken off his laptop.. Anyone with an interest in space and astronomy will find this a fascinating visit.

Johnston Ridge Observatory

This visitor center has a wonderful view directly of the volcano and the valley below. The movie is worthwhile and there are many interesting exhibits. Even the drive up the mountain is interesting though it takes about an hour from highway 5. We waited for a clear day to make the trip fearing on other trips that the mountain would be obscured by clouds.

LIGO Hanford Observatory

LIGO Hanford is one of the two Laser Interferometry Gravitational Observatories that first detected the gravitational wave propagating from the collision of two black holes a few years ago and then more recently two neutron stars. For this the LIGO team was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. The tour is fascinating, as you'll get a sense of the unprecedented precision with which distance is measured. Mind-blowing. Check ahead for when tours are operating.
