Brasstown Bald Mountain

While you shouldn’t miss the views from the top of the paved trail, don’t overlook the Amazing hike of the Wagon Trail! It was more rugged and lonely with fewer hikers. It really felt like we were on an adventure. We were visiting the third week of March and the weather that day was perfect with clear blue skies and about 40 degrees. The rhododendron and laurel had not bloomed yet, but we thought it would be beautiful in a few weeks! Expect to walk through some mud and areas where the streams converge with the trail. Don’t miss it!

Union County is one of our top destinations in the GA mountains and Meeks Parks is a big part of that. Just relaxing to watch families enjoying this great property. Crime would not permit this in many other communities.

Vogel State Park

My wife and I traveled to Vogel State Park on my birthday to hike the Bear Hair Gap Trail which climbs into the Blood Mountain Wilderness. The park was extremely busy and near capacity. We barely got in around 11 am. I recommend coming early. The trail begins near the cabins. Once we got onto the trail, the crowds rapidly thinned out. Bear Hair Gap Trail is mostly a back country trail. We had to ford many small streams. The scenery was stunning! The air was refreshing despite the high humidity of late May. Our first goal was to reach Vogel Overlook which was about a 1000 foot climb. This was a rigorous climb and I had to stop frequently to make it. The overlook gave us a rare opportunity to see where the car was parked giving us perspective on how high we climbed. Rather than head straight back down the mountain, we decided to hike deeper into the wilderness toward Blood Mountain. The trail only rose slowly for the next couple of miles. Near the intersection with the Coosa Backcountry trail, we discovered a several hundred foot high waterfall in the trees. It wasn’t shown on any map. We were amazed and so excited! Our hike back down the Coosa trail too was exciting with more waterfalls and rock formations frequently emerging out of the forest as we hiked. The solitude and beauty of this area was wonderful. I can not recommend this hike enough!

Desoto Falls

Recently my brother and I visited DeSoto Falls. We arrived around 10am and there was parking available (limited parking, $4.00 fee). You begin the hike by walking through a shaded area where picnic tables with grills are available. You then proceed on a paved road (next to the campground) where you will come to a wooden bridge that spans the Frogtown Creek. At this point the trail splits. Turn right and you walk to the upper falls (1.5 miles) turn left to travel to the lower falls (1/2 mile). We did both. Both trails are natural terrain, in fairly good shape, beautiful scenery with a moderate change in elevation plus they are family friendly. Beautiful scenery along the way on both trails. At Lower DeSoto Falls there is a wooden platform where you can view the water cascading over a rock outcrop and spilling onto large boulders. The trail to the upper falls travels through the forest (lots of rhododendrons) and runs alongside the creek. You will cross a wooden bridge just before reaching the multi-tiered upper falls. This is the larger of the two falls. Out-and-back to both falls is just over 2 miles. Desoto Falls is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park is open 7am-10pm daily; dog friendly; restrooms on site; The campground which is adjacent to the parking area is located on Frogtown creek. FYI... great trout fishing!

Helton Creek Falls

By far the best waterfall we visited. Getting there is a bit sketchy if you don’t have a truck or SUV. Traveled with 2 year old. You could easily take kids here to swim for hours during the summer. The walk is easy to the lower falls and even to the upper falls. The lower area is just above the ankle and slower moving so great for kids to be able to splash around in the sandy solid without worrying about slipping on the rocks. I would recommend water shoes on the rest of the rocks though. They were far more slippery than some of the other falls. This is a 2 tier waterfall. The swimming at the upper falls is probably 4-5’ deep under the falls. Water was COLD July 31st. Definitely take the drive!

Byron Herbert Reece Trail

Love this hike. The trailhead for this 1.35 mile out-and-back trail starts just off the main highway (Small very limited parking area). Located on the lower elevations of Blood Mountain just below Neels Gap the trail runs beside the Shanty Branch Creek as it meanders & winds through a lush forest with lots of rhododendron and mountain Laurel. If you have any type of mobility issues (such as bad knees) sections of this trail will be extremely challenging. Keep in mind that there are several small creeks to ford as well as rough hewn stone steps and stairs to navigate as you gain elevation along the way. The trail ends at Flatrock Gap (4 way trail junction) at the .65 mile point. You will have a great view of the surrounding mountains and also have the opportunity to step foot on the Appalachian Trail before starting your decent back to the parking lot. Open daily; dog friendly. One of North Georgia’s most popular hikes.
