This is the only remaining undisturbed tropical evergreen rainforest in India.
Silent valley national park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forests and tropical moist evergreen forest in India. It is part of the Nilgiri Sub-Cluster, Western Ghats World Heritage Site, recognised by UNESCO in 2007. Entrance is from Mukkali which is 50 km from Coimbatore. Prior booking is required. From Mukkali forest department arranges 25 km drive which takes 2 hours to reach Sairandhri. View from 100 feet height watchtower is awesome. 360 degree view of lush green dense forests. River kunthi flows at this place. It is nice experience but 25 km ride is tiresome.

My wife and I stayed at Thekkady, Idukki from 7th Nov 2018 to 12th Nov 2018. We stayed at The Treetop Resort, which is 500 meters away from Periyar Tiger Reserve entrance. The resort is amazing and you can check my review of The Treetop Resort. Usually people prefer to stay for 1 or 2 days at Thekkady. Thekkady is part of Munnar – Thekkady – Alleppey triangle tour. If you plan to directly go to Thekkady, Cochin airport is the closest airport and it takes 5 hours to reach Thekkady. You can book AC cab at airport for INR 5,000. Though the route is scenic and passes through forest, you won’t see any wild life on your way to Thekkady. According to forest guides, the best season to visit Periyar Tiger Reserve is Nov – May. It wasn’t crowded at all during our visit as we visited during Diwali vacation. Following are the various ecotourism activities conducted at Periyar Tiger Reserve (Check pictures for more details). I am not sure if the activities can be booked online. I highly recommend to book the activities in advance, as they have limited slots. Note: • Rates and timing as of Nov 2018. Children below 12 years are not allowed in any trekking activities • No vehicles are allowed inside the park, all the activities are either walking or boating • You’ll spot lot of local guides offering Jeep safaris, but the safaris are on the outskirts and periphery of the forest • Tiger reserve entry fee has to be paid over and above any activity charge • Don’t expect to spot a tiger or leopard during any of the activities. You can see Bisons, Elephants, Sambar, Wild Boar, Black Monkeys, Giant Squirrels etc. Boating. Ecotourism activities - Nature Walk, Green Walk, Jungle Scout, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Tiger Trail, Bamboo Groove, Pugmark Trail, Jungle Camp, Jungle Inn, Tribal Dance Contact detail: Phone - +914869224571, +918547603066 Ticket Booking - Kerala Forest Tourism Information Centre (Search on Google Maps) Boating ticket/Bus stand/Entrance ticket address - National Park Ticket Office (Search on Google Maps) Boat landing (Most of the activities start at this point, you can buy bus ticket from bus stand) During our stay at Thekkady we did 1) Pugmark trail – You can check my review at https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowUserReviews-g297636-d1751438-r635734253-Periyar_Tiger_Reserve-Thekkady_Idukki_District_Kerala.html 2) Bamboo rafting (full day) – You can check review at https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowUserReviews-g297636-d10532079-r635735843-Bamboo_Rafting_at_Periyar_Wildlife_Sanctuary-Thekkady_Idukki_District_Kerala.html 3) Ayurvedic Massage – Shirodhara at Pranamaya 4) Spice and souvenir shopping at local market Why go to Thekkady/Periyar Tiger Reserve – Relaxation, hike and rafting through dense forest. Don’t go if your sole aim is to spot wild life.
