HMAS Sydney II Memorial

Magnificent and symbolic memorial to the 645 crew members of HMAS Sydney II who are still on patrol. The memorial is among the best war memorial that we have seen anywhere we have visited over the years with the Wall of Remembrance, the Sanctuary, the Stele, the Pool of Remembrance and, perhaps the most poignant, the Waiting Woman Sculpture looking eternally to the sea for the return of her sailor. There were a lot of visitors, both young and adult, yet there was silence as if everybody recognised that they stood in a special place.

Army Museum of Western Australia

The Army Museum of Western Australia is a regional museum which showcases Western Australia's role in the various conflicts in which Australia has participated. Saying that it also brings to the front Australia's role in the many conflicts that have seen an involvement by Australian armed forces. The Museum occupies the whole of the 1912 Artillery Barracks site, which in itself is a significant historical building and is heritage listed. There are many Galleries situated on the ground floor and upper floor in addition to other displays in out buildings and the front parade ground show cases a large number of Army vehicles from many periods. Some of the Galleries cover Pre 1914, WW1, WW1 Middle East, POW, WW2 Middle East Greece and Africa, WW2 Pacific War, Post WW2 conflicts. There are more! Visits for the public are conducted at 10:30am and 1:00pm each day, from Wednesday through to Sunday. Visits take approximately two hours and are escorted. All adult visitors to the museum must have the appropriate photo ID. The Museum is run in the main by Curatorial and Guide Volunteers. Well worth a look, you will be surprised at the content and layout of the displays. Western Australia, being so isolated has a reputation for building excellent Museums as the population are a bit restricted in being able to visit the Eastern States facilities. One thing that comes through from visitors comments to this page and the actual Museum visitors is to allow a good two hours for your visit, that is the minimum to cover the full displays.

This museum is an outstanding representation of the Western Australia army's history. Extensive collection of footage, personal items, uniforms, arms, etc. If you have an interest in this topic you can spend hours moving through the building's different rooms. They are in order as you move through the last two centuries. We spent two hours focusing on WWI and WWII. There are tanks and armaments outdoors as well. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday 1030am - 3pm BUT last entry is at 1pm. You must show photo ID.

Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum

Welcome to the Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum. And welcome to a place with a truly fascinating history to impart. The Museum is housed in a massive Army Vehicle Workshop building that was constructed in 1942-43 as part of Australia’s defence during WWII … well out of the way of Japanese aircraft. Part of No.5 Base Ordnance Depot (5BOD), the whole complex was built at a cost of approximately 10 million pounds and was considered at the time to be the largest storage facility for Army Ordnance in WA. As well as the Army Vehicle Workshop, 5BOD incorporated tank workshops, five huge storehouses, a powerhouse, post office, administration blocks and medical facilities. There was also a multitude of other workshops, shelters, offices and an extensive car park. After the war, most of these facilities and buildings were sold, with the Nungarin Shire purchasing the Army Vehicle Workshop for use as a Shire Depot. One of the very few remaining large volume, timber military build
