Mount Pleasant Lookout

Have driven past the sign to Mt Pleasant many times. This visit we decided to explore. The lookout is poorly signposted but when you find it, the view is worth it. The lookout incorporates an Artillery Memorial with good signage. The view is expansive and gives a different view of Canberra’s highlights.

Mount Stromlo Observatory

We did the walking tour (only available once a month or so. Check the events calendar on their website). Absolutely fascinating. Tour guide was an astronomer working at the current observatory who took us round the remains of the old observatory, giving us a lot of history and what happened in the 2003 bush fires. Then we had a visit to the new facility, including touring the area where they build and test satellites and instrumentation. The guide was both informative and entertaining. Apparently, the room containing all the graduate theses was burnt, and there is a memorial urn contain ashes from the library in the admin building. There is a tradition now that each graduate burns a copy of his/her thesis. Highly recommend if you're there at the right time. Otherwise, the visitor centre is very good, the destroyed telescope buildings very sad, the partially restored director's house interesting and views are superb. Well worth the drive up the hill.
