The 7 Best History Museums in Province of Vizcaya, Basque Country

April 28, 2022 Stefan Strunk

Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

Ferreria de El Pobal

El Pobal Ironworks is located in Muskiz, in a beautiful bend of Barbadun River, whose water power up this old hydraulic device that made iron for more than 500 years. This foundry, which has been declared Monumental Complex, is the best preserved of the many that existed in Biscay and the only one that has survived until our days with a good part of its machinery. During the visit, you will enjoy a practical demonstration in the forge and in the metal workshop. Without a doubt, it represents one of the most remarkable elements of our historical and cultural heritage. The Foundry was built at the beginning of the XVIth Century by the Salazar, the lineage that dominated this region named Encartaciones. During the XVIIIth Century the installations and the hydraulic infrastructure was completely rebuilt and at the end of the XIXth Century the foundry was converted into a metalworking workshop that extended its productive life until 1965.

The Basque Museum offers more than just the standard local artefacts collection. History, topography, culture, architecture, and the relationship between those. Even the language and family names are covered. Plenty to see, very inexpensive. Allow at least two hours.

Bizkaia Museum of Archaeology

Reviewed By GSAJ - Blenheim, New Zealand

This looks like a very small museum from the outside but that is deceiving. If you are interested in the prehistoric and later archeological history of the area then this is an excellent exhibition. The price -€3 pp provides great value for money. The displays and interactive screens are great but be aware the subtitles are all in Spanish and Basque. The very obliging receptionist provided an English translation booklet on loan which was much appreciated.
