Western Australia (abbreviated as WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, the Great Australian Bight and Southern Ocean to the south, the Northern Territory to the north-east and South Australia to the south-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state, with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia's Sakha Republic. The state has about 2.6 million inhabitants – around 11% of the national total – with 92% living in the south-west corner, mostly in the Perth area, leaving the remainder of the state sparsely populated.

No-one is exactly sure what goes on in Government House, but it you get an invitation, go. The building is a fine example of colonial era craftsmanship; I have been fortunate enought to be invited to functions at Government House several times and it's worth the effort. The WA Governor is the Representarive of the Head of State. The current Governor is Kim Beazley AC, one of WA's most respected public figures.

Completed in 1870, this delightful Victorian Gothic landmark was completely restored in 2005. It is the only convict-built capital city town hall in Australia, and a fragment of the original convict roll is on permanent display in the foyer with other City of Perth memorabilia. Generally open 11:00AM-1:00PM weekdays, but phone 08 9229 2965 first because it is sometimes closed for private functions. Free historic tour every Thursday at 2:00PM.
Beautiful building dating to 1869 and the only Town Hall in Australia built in the Gothic style and built by convicts. I last visited in the 1980/90's for philatelic exhibitions and collector fairs. Since then the building has undergone extensive renovation and restoration, completed in 2005, and which returned the building to its former charm and elegance. Wonderful to have the opportunity to revisit and view the interior restorations and the artefacts displayed on the upper floor. The massive support columns add an aura of permanence. Great informative plaques are affixed to the exterior walls. This grand building is set to charm many future generations.

I was the only person on the free 10.30am tour and it was excellent. Sarah, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable both about the building and its history, but also the legislative process. I would recommend the tour highly to anyone who has an enquiring mind about how and why laws are enacted. I even got to sit in the Speaker’s chair in the lower house. Great views over the city too, from in front of the Parliament building.
