See orangutans in the rainforest at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. This unique wildlife sanctuary specializes in caring for baby orphan orangutans and teaches them the survival skills they would have learned from their mothers under normal conditions. The young orangutans are not kept in captivity, but rather come and go as they please while adjusting to their natural habitat. Lunch and a city tour of Sandakan are included.

Inclusions: Lunch, Driver/guide, Hotel/airport pickup and drop-off, Transport by air-conditioned minivan

Exclusions: Airfares/flights

This was part of an organised trip. If you can only park near the gate it is a 1.5km walk. The rangers call the orangatan after 9 so you can see them feeding at 10. We where very lucky to see one, however it is pot luck. Also if they spot one you need to move to the place quickly. It is not for the infirm or probables with walking. I would also recommend mosquito replant and long trousers with trainers. They are leeches and ticks in certain areas. It is worth the trip.

We came to the Proboscis Monkey Centre in time for the feeding, whilst there were no Proboscis around, there were a troupe of sleepy Silver Monkeys around the platforms. The guides placed some bits of food on to the feeding platforms and made some monkey calls and eventually they came, we could see them coming through the trees, the young came out first then some of the older females followed by the big male. It was interesting to witness the hierarchy within the troupe.

This place could not better the experience of seeing the 'old man of the forest' but what a great idea to have it so close by. It is worth about an hour or so of your time to learn interesting facts at this centre. It is well laid out and a lot of care is taken to educate and learn about the sun bears. They even have a scope so that you can look at the stingless bees or any other interesting smaller critters that lives close to the bears. I liked the part where there is photos and the names with some info about each one of the bears.

My boyfriend and I stayed for the 2 nights 3 days trip. We had the best time here and couldn't recommend it more. From the moment we were picked up from our hotel in Sepilok we were seamlessly looked after by all the amazing staff. The journey there consisted of a private mini bus, followed by two boat trips with a short walk between them through the jungle. Our accomodation in one of the private rooms was basic, and most of our free time was spent relaxing on the hammocks or sitting on the balcony dining area watching the river and looking for wildlife. You're totally disconnected from the outside world here with no phone signal or WiFi (which is so rare!). Trips through the jungle by foot, or down the river by boat happen at day and night, and are so well thought out. The guides were so good at what they do, and it was such a luxury to have such well informed people show us around. We spotted so many different animals and learnt so much about the rainforest. It's also amazing value for money! Food was plentiful and there was unlimited tea and filtered water available. If you're after the luxury of a hot shower, electricity and AC/fans this is not for you. But I must say that I was hesitant about the basic nature of this camp before I went, but it was completely forgotten about while I was there, as it was overshadowed by the incredible experience of being at the heart of the rainforest.
