One of my favourite experiences in Myanmar was an unforgettable evening spent enjoying the colourful performances of cultural dance and music that tell the dramatic and funny traditional stories of Myanmar. The dances are performed in an atmospheric traditional style theatre. They are easy to understand, and aided by a very friendly host who briefly explains the dances in English prior to each performance. It was also an unexpected delight to see the 70 (?) year old dance master perform. The school provides an amazing opportunity by sponsoring children from rural areas to become professional dancers. It's wonderful to see young people learning traditional art forms. They have clearly trained hard and it's heart-warming to see genuine joy when they dance.

I really enjoyed the Mandalay Marionette Theatre. The show was in a small theatre, which seats about 65 or so and is small and intimate. You are close to the stage, the owner and actors come out to talk and show you how the puppets work. The show is explained in English, they reveal how the puppeteers are working, and the performance is fun and interesting to experience. It is well worth the hour, it adds a little bit of local culture to any visit to Mandalay, and it helps keep this traditional art alive. I recommend to anyone to visit, esp if you want to learn more about Myanmar. Well done and thanks :)

The majestic Karaweik Palace is a beautiful restaurant on Kandawgyi Lake. We serve both A La Carte menu from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM and International buffet dinner with culture performances from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM in each halls.
This Palace is situated in Kandawgyi Lake, which offers a buffet dinner and cultural show every evening. You are allowed entry at 6pm, where you can first try some local snacks, put on Thanaka (traditional yellowish cosmestic paste), and even get a Burmese name! The buffet dinner is amazing, with a range of local, other Asian and Western cuisine! There is also a great range of vegetarian food, as I quite enjoyed the Japanese tofu dish! The cultural show is also beautiful as they display traditional dances from the major tribes in Myanmar (I really enjoyed the Kachin dance). It is a little bit expensive, but it is one of those things that you HAVE to do in Yangon. A word of advice, when making a booking, make sure to get a table that is not too close to the stage.

A fantastic, slightly surreal, show. Don't miss it! Only an hour long (ours was 30 mins as Lu Maw had issues with his glaucoma). We read mixed reviews but thought we would judge for ourselves; we were not disappointed. Highly recommended.
