Northern Ostrobothnia (Finnish: Pohjois-Pohjanmaa; Swedish: Norra Österbotten) is a region of Finland. It borders the Finnish regions of Lapland, Kainuu, Northern Savonia, Central Finland and Central Ostrobothnia, as well as the Russian Republic of Karelia.

The old church from 1777 was destroyed in the big Oulu fire in 1822. The current stone cathedral was completed in 1832 over the ruins of the old church. It was made according to the neoclassical designs of the famous architect Carl Ludvig Engel who also designed the Helsinki Cathedral. The interior is very beautiful.
The parish church of Haapajarvi named after the Transfiguration of Christ. The church has been built in 1802 and rebuilt in 1880. The church is a typical wooden church in cruciform with a seating capacity of 800 people. The altarpiece has been painted by a famous Finnish artist Adolf von Becker in 1886. Holy Mass (Lutheran) on Sundays at 10 am.
