The Weardale Museum is a volunteer run charity in Ireshopeburn, County Durham. It is a small cottage museum which occupies the house next to High House Methodist Chapel, the oldest methodist Chapel in continuous use. The Museum collection tells the story of the lead-mining people and also their encounters with John Wesley and the early methodists and a visit to the chapel is part of the admission fee. The trustees encourage visitors to touch and interact with many of the fascinating objects in their Weardale Kitchen. Durham quilts and a beautifully embroidered tapestry of Weardale History are among the highlights of a visit as well as the collection of sparkling crystals and minerals from the nearby lead mines. For those interested in family history we offer a huge database of over 60,000 Weardale people. Our season starts at the Easter weekend and then we are open From May 1st to October 31st. I am an American who has researched my genealogy, trying to learn more about my English ancestors for many years. I've discovered many far-flung relatives in the US, also descending from John Atkinson and Martha Miller of Stanhope, England. Amazingly, all of us had the same family lore: that our great great grandfather played with a band that performed in the Crystal Palace. But we never got the whole story about who they were and how and why we ended up in America. Until we connected with Ken Heatherington of the Weardale Museum. He had all the intertwined names of my ancestors, their stories and relationships. I can't say how much I appreciate the Weardale Museum helping us solve ancestral mysteries and giving faces and personalities to our ancestors who, before this, were only names on a chart.

Tunstall is a lovely reservoir, very natural with a wood along one side, and it is an easy walk all the way around, although its is muddy in wet weather. On our last visit we walked to the nature reserve at the top end then across to Salter's Gate and up towards the dismantled railway line. It was a lovely walk, although incredibly muddy. We also had to skirt around a herd of cows. There is parking at Tunstall, although I suspect it is really for the fisherman, who have a club there. The toilets are sometimes open. I believe the car park has been closed owing to the current pandemic.

Weardale Open Air Swimming Pool is the only heated open air swimming pool in County Durham. It is located in Stanhope, Weardale . This is a brilliant traditional pub right in the middle of Wolsingham village. There is a very friendly atmosphere, a good selection of beers and spirits, and a very friendly pub cat too. Although we didn't eat here, we were told there are theme nights (curry etc) and these are hugely popular and need to be booked via the pubs Facebook page. There is a TV for sports fans but this does not interfere with the quiet and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are polite and friendly and make you feel very welcome. Overall a very positive experience and a pub I would definitely go back to.

We are a visitor and business development centre welcoming visitors to Weardale. We're a great starting point for exploring the area. Our Gift Shop is stuffed full of interesting, quirky and original items and our "Durham Dales Kitchen" serves an extensive range of hearty food. Our beautiful gardens and grounds are great places to eat or just sit and enjoy Wonderful Weardale! We're developing activities for local people with a programme of evening workshops and events. All are welcome.

We often pop in here for a snack or even a meal, they offer a nice menu..Parking is sometimes tight but not surprising as there is more than a cafe there. A smashing Shop in information shop, lots of interesting items. the shop and centre is open all ear round, a big bonus. also enjoy the several shops in their little square. A vets is surrounded by locally hand made items, They show a lot of talent. A good selection of cards are included. The area is a place of natural beauty. there are several caravan sites, a steam railway, They also brag a country fair, one of oldest in Britain, held every first week in September. A very enjoyable place.
