Some of the most interesting volcanic landscape in Europe can be found in La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, one hour and a half north of Barcelona. The Garrotxa's Volcanic Zone is the best example of volcanic terrain on the Iberian Peninsula. It has 40 volcanic cones and more than 20 lava flows.

We visited at the end of October which is probably the best time to go. There were very few people around and we were able to wander around in blissful silence. The colours are amazing and the walking trails are clearly marked. At the end of our walk we took the horse drawn carriage which leaves from the main carpark. The ride takes about an hour and costs 10 euros for adults. I would highly recommend this ride as it takes you to a different part of the area.
