If you’re fond of wagashi, these traditional Japanese sweets that are almost too beautiful to eat, I warmly recommend you to attend Nariko’s nerikiri workshop. Nerikiri is a type of wagashi made of white and read bean dough that should reflect the season it's being served in. Nariko taught me how to mold saruka (cherry blossom) flowers, peonies, chrysanthemums, and other artistic shapes. I was fascinated by how easily you get beautiful results. The whole experience was unique thanks to Nariko’s passion and patience.

I am a big fan of learning as much about a culture when I travel as I can and I love spending time with the locals to do that. When I saw a cooking experience in Japan, I knew we needed to jump on that despite a reluctant (non-cooking) husband. We picked 2 of our favorite items we like to eat (although nearly everything in Japanese cuisine is delicious in our books) and booked our time with Yuca. We were not disappointed in the slightest and had a most wonderful time learning to make Ramen and Gyoza from scratch. My husband even said he enjoyed it far more than he ever imagined! WIN! We were invited into her home to cook with her and I not only came away with new recipes for our home menu rotation, but the need for a miso muddler and a ginger ginger (we were staying in Asakusa at the time and this was a quick and easy errand to run the same day!). I also bought her first cookbook and will subscribe to her YouTube channel so I can learn even more. We highly recommend this experience for anyone else who wants to dive deeper into a culture and have a wonderful experience! Thank you Yuca!

Nippori Fabric Town

Reviewed By truthinreporting - Cook Islands, null

I visited the Nippori Fabric Town last month. Despite having a cold, being an avid seamstress, I dragged myself out of my warm and cozy hotel room and set off to see it for myself. Fabric Town is based mainly around one long street (and side streets)with shops on either side selling all things to do with fabrics and sewing...a little piece of heaven for people like me. I wandered from shop to shop, buying pieces of leather and the types of findings or haberdashery I couldn't usually find at home. Of course I found the shops with the gorgeous Japanese prints which is where all my resolve to not go home overloaded simply fell apart. The prices were great. I bought two metre lengths of cotton prints for Y10,000 - about $17NZD -. I also found there the doorway hangings that you see in front of restaurants, added a pair to the bag. But then....I happened across a narrow store that sold used Yakuta, Kimono and so on. I came out with a man's indigo dyed, silk robe in new condition for Y2,000 - a remarkable find! So if you're passionate about fabrics and crafting I fully recommend you try fabric town. Its less than 100m to the beginning of the street from Nippori station. I went on a weekday around 1.00pm and avoided the train "crush" and the overly busy period in Fabric Town.

Yuyake Dandan

Reviewed By PinkFlamingoHappines - Melbourne, Australia

Exciting couple of hours spent in this area (before walking to Ueno Park... a great days' activity) shopping, eating, drinking and soaking in the atmosphere. A great spot for cat spotting (and the occasional dogs!); bring your camera and cash!
