Portimao is a sailor’s delight, thanks to its calm waters and beautiful conditions. Plenty of elite international competitions happen here, but you don’t have to be a professional to set sail. Cruising the coast on the double-masted Santa Bernarda pirate ship is a family favorite. On dry land, you can wander the lovely Alvor boardwalk, enjoy a succulent seafood meal or zip around the go-kart track at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

The apartments are spread over four types: Studio, Superior Studio, T1 and T2, some apartments have a generous balcony. (See the description of the apartments) Studio 17 only has an adult pool. This accommodation is approximately a 10/15 minute walk from the beach. The city center of Portimao, Portimao Marina and Praia da Rocha are a 5-minute drive away. Portimao Train Station is 3 km from Studio 17. This accommodation is recommended for good value for money in Portimao. Great place to spend your vacation.
Studio17 have changed the process if you don't arrive when the reception is open. You now need to phone the Plaza Real, the number is on the outside wall, there is also a taxi number if you have to go there. Now not easy to get into your room if you arrive after 5pm, phone Plaza Real to get the 4 digit code for the lock box, then you get the key to enter the building, you also get a piece of paper with an 8 digit code, but to enter the room you need a 10 digit code, you need to enter 0 the 8 digit code then press the key code. OKay when you know, but tough if you have problems.

We spent ages choosing this Portimao guest house, but our expectations of it were not met. It's an odd concept, offering a room in an unstaffed house, that doesn't offer breakfast but also doesn't offer any catering facilities?? We booked a "Superior Triple room with balcony & city view". What we actually got was a clean, well-decorated double-bed room, sparsely furnished with one chair, no table to sit at. The balcony was a tiny Juliet balcony overlooking a narrow street & the house opposite- not big enough to stand on, let alone sit on, but then, the "city view" was actually a large canvas/photo of old Portimao city, over the bed, not a view of Portimao. Sadly, the advertised roof terrace wasn't offered to us during our stay. That might have saved the day. The house itself is a beautifully restored old Portugese house in a narrow cobbled street, which unfortunately was used as a rat-run by traffic, till the early hours. The house was very clean & well decorated, but without any creature comforts. We'd spent the previous few nights in a comfy hotel in Faro , with a marina view & delicious breakfast, so ND Prestige was a stark contrast. It would be fine for one night, but not for several. The owner met us on arrival, gave us a long run-down of their Covid protocols , then left. We let ourselves out on check-out. (The housekeeper was lovely, we crossed paths briefly a few times, as she let herself in). In short, the accommodation websites (hotels.com in this instance) need to ensure their descriptions of properties meet the reality.

Nice, clean budget apartment, well-managed and very helpful staff. This was the first time we had visited Alvor, as we usually book up the road in Playa. We found the house comfortable and cosy, with a sun terrace on the roof, and a communal kitchen on the ground floor with cutlery, plates etc for your use. Recommended.

We stayed here for 5 days. Very simple accommodations but the price was right. We picked this hotel mostly because it was walking distance to the train station and the bus station. It in an interesting and non-touristy part of town. That was good. The staff was friendly and attentive. The breakfast was basic but good given the price point of the hotel. The breakfast was a one person show but she was very attentive. Now the bad stuff. There was a sign over the toilet requesting that toilet paper be thrown in the trash can rather than the toilet. Huh? The first night I used the public toilet near the lobby, just to be safe. After that I simply ignored the sign and everything was okay, still, kind of unsettling. We emailed the hotel before we arrived to confirm that there was parking available. They replied that there was plenty of street parking near the hotel. This was absolutely not true. Parking was a nightmare, it was the most stressful part of our trip. All the streets in this part of town are narrow one-way streets that require you to drive onto the curb and park partially on the sidewalk. Most streets also have restricted parking which was hard to decipher. There were some paid parking garages nearby but they were not 24 hour garages so we were unable to use them. I would stay here again, but only if I didn't have or need a car.
