Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and a UNESCO world heritage site, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and one of the most populous cities in the Caribbean. The city is a mix of old world charm and modern Latin flair. Its medieval palaces and fortresses mix with nightlife and shopping to rival any modern city in the world. You'll find pristine beaches and hidden gems like a salsa/merengue club set inside a huge underground cave.

Amber Museum in front of the colonial park with a wide exhibition of amber (incl. the biggest piece ever found of 13.4 kg), Larimar and other precious materials from this island. In the Amber Art Gallery we offer high quality jewelry made from local materials. The museum is located in one of the oldest buildings in Santo Domingo constructed by Francisco Tostado in the years 1505 to 1508.
It turns out that all the Amber/Larimar museums are stores with some educational displays upstairs in the museum part, along with some really elegantly carved pieces. This Amber Museum (next to the plaza) has very reasonable prices and friendly staff, and the carver is there so you are more confident the work is done here instead of India/China. The store has an extensive selection of different insect-containing ambers as displays or jewelry, and the staff was super patient with us looking over these under a magnifying glass. Their larimar is also better priced than the Larimar Museum (which seems to be owned by Amber World). Make sure you check out the large carved Amber pieces upstairs including the octopus!
