Macbride Nature Recreation Area

This place was a very pleasant and unusual surprise. The Raptor Project rehabilitates birds like bald eagles, kestrels, hawks of all sorts, and owls. Some are released back into the wild after their injuries are healed, but there are always a few who are so badly hurt they can't fly, and so live the rest of their lives in attentive captivity. Here they're kept separately in large wooden shelters, fed and cared for by a loving staff. Visitors walk down a long path, viewing these fabulous birds from a few feet away. We saw a great horned owl, a short horned owl (wow, are these cute!), a red-tailed hawk, a barn owl, a bald eagle, a vulture, a kestrel, a gyrfalcon, and various other raptors. A few were so imprinted on people that they "talked" to us. It was a cool, cloudy day, but we didn't mind the weather at all as we moved from display to display. One of the staff invited us into the station to see the red-tailed hawk and the vulture, kept inside because it was too cold for them to remain in their usual enclosures. We spent a good couple of hours there, including time in the Bird Blind, where we watched woodpeckers, juncos, and various other types of winter birds flitting through tree branches, keeping an eye on the four does licking up corn and other goodies almost within reach. We had a great time. This place does get crowded in warm months, where they can have as many as 600 people go through in one day. Getting this close to these fantastic birds was wonderful!

Lake Macbride State Park

My wife and I were visiting our out-doorsy hiking type son who lives in North Liberty last week, and he brought us here to hike around the beautiful lake. Unfortunately, there were many large trees and branches across the trails from the recent storms in the area. These were not too difficult to negotiate, and we made about 3.5 miles round trip around the lake. Two pictures of the lake from different spots along the lake perimeter trail are attached.
