My sister and I took a day trip to see Sigmaringen Castle - the ancestral home of the Von Hohenzollern family. The castle is still privately owned and as such is only open for paid tours, but the 9,50euro admission to the castle is well worth it. We did not do the Armory tour combination ticket as we really had no interest in that aspect of the castle, but the tour guide did tell us about many of the items we would have seen as we toured the many rooms available to us. The tour guide, Frau Reinier-Sau was French and spoke German, French and very good English so although we were given a printed English translation booklet to use to follow along with the tour, we were able to ask questions and communicate very well. The 400 room castle sits atop a cliff above the Danube in the Baden Wurttemburg region of Germany, about an hour South of Stuttgart, where my sister lives. The drive was filled with quaint villages and sweeping vistas, as well as a glimpse or 2 of other castles. Also owned by the, once very politically influential, von Hohenzollern family. If, like me, you find yourself with the time to see only 1 castle in Germany, this is the one to see!

Hohenzollern Castle in Sigmaringen & Armory Hohenzollern Castle is Germany’s second largest Castle; It is a cultural monument that comprises a veritable treasure trove of German and European history, thanks to its 1,000-year heritage. But for the families of the Princes of Hohenzollern, the Castle has been their beloved home since the 16th century and is associated with many personal memories.
