Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

Ward's Island Park is the name that is (sometimes) used for the lower half of Randall's Island Park. Why? Because Randall's Island and Ward's Island used to be two separate islands separated by a fairly broad waterway known as Little Hell Gate, until Robert Moses filled in that channel using construction rubble. I live not that far from Wards Island, and I access it often by walking over the 103rd Street Footbridge. Most of the park part of Ward's Island is very pretty indeed, and it really has a lot to offer, including miles of tree-lined walking and cycling paths by the water, and a gorgeous wildflower garden with fabulous views across Hell Gate to Queens. I like to walk up the west side of Ward's island, along the Water's Edge Garden, and through the woodland trail, until I reach the Little Hell Gate Salt Marsh, which is an extraordinarily natural-seeming, award-winning, piece of habitat restoration. On the more easterly side of Ward's Island is a fabulous Urban Farm, and a great children's playground. Ward's Island and Randall's Island are currently underappreciated, but totally worth a day's outing.

Dramatically set in the middle of the East River on Randall’s Island just off of Manhattan, this 3-day festival features a wide-ranging mix of bands that range from indie rock to hip-hop. Fairly new to the festival scene since it debuted in 2011, it has quickly grown into one of New York’s most popular music events. In between sets, attendees can sample treats from New York’s best food trucks, try their luck with a lawn game or just take in the sweeping views of the city.

LuminoCity Festival, which runs on Randall's Island from November 23rd to January 5th, features over 16 acres of spectacular, larger than life light and art instillations for teens, parents, and families to enjoy. Beyond the lights, there will be holiday shopping, food and drink, activities, and performances/shows.
We all enjoyed the Festival of Lights. NYC is beautifully located in the background. The illuminations are beautiful and plenty of photos will be taken. There is a heated tent with food, drinks and entertainment. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.
