This is quite unique to have a monument in Australia that is a memorial of the United States 5th Air Force memorial. On November 4 1942 the 5th Air Force went after the Japanese in Papua New Guinea. They continued to attack the Japanese and save the Papua New Guinea. In 1945 they were part in the Battle of Okinawa. This is why there is a small obelix in Townsville. It has 8 sides and it is about 1.2 meters high. All is written here of what happened. The flag of the United States and the Australian are proudly near this monument.

I was staying on Flinders St within walking distance of Anzac Park and came across the bright lights at the fountain as I was coming down Wickham St. The fountain is the centrepiece of the park. It was a magical place and I spent a while mesmerised by the light show. The colours change from red to blue to green, even rainbow. There is also a gazebo inside the park and I met a friendly possum there who seemed fine with humans. Well worth a stop off after dark.

Townsville is not renowned for mild summers. They are appalling actually. Yet this is a cool oasis in the middle of this mid sized regional city with interesting and beautifully planted gardens, water features and striking views of castle hill. It’s a real pleaser. Whether it’s for a visit as a tourist or an escape from the heat for the locals this should really be high on the list of things to do in Townsville for locals and visitors alike. Great spaces for kids to run around in, in total safety. Got to love it.

Located at Jezzine Barracks in Townsville, the Museum collects and exhibits objects and stories relating to the history of the Australian Army in North Queensland.
Shout out to the lovely and very dedicated volunteers at this Museum. The work and thought that has gone into the displays is obvious. Set on the now public grounds of Jezzine Barracks, the Museum provides a comprehensive account of Australia’s military history and the rolls of honour for WW1 and WW2 are just beautiful.
