We went in around 11.00 hrs with a camper van, no 4WD. According to the roadmap this should not be a problem. Well it isn't as long as you take care. In some places it is like a 4WD track. Upon arriving we were suprised to be the only ones. The girge was all ours. We took a long walk and loved every minute of it. It is not Katherine gorge but to be honest we loved this gorge more.

An evocative reminder of the former Northern Australia Railway and the great hopes held. Pine Creek Railway Station is a former railway station on the former North Australia Railway in Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. The railway was extended to Pine Creek in 1889 during the gold rush and was the southern terminus of the line until 1914. The station operated until 1976, and during World War II Pine Creek was one of the four dispersal bases on the North Australian Railway with up to 147 services a week. The station precinct is the most complete remaining example of infrastructure associated with the North Australia Railway. Today you will see one of the original Beyer Peacock locomotives on display and a former Western Australian Government Railways TA class diesel-electric shunting engine. In addition to the railway building with waiting rooms, there is a large goods shed and a house for a railway employee.
Stopped in at this museum on our way south and we found the museum in the old original railway station. The museum is small but an informative caretaker was most obliging to show us around including opening up the caged area housing a restored steam engine. If your stopping in at pine creek this museum inspection is a must.

Climbing up a steep path towards the lookout and suddenly you get full view of the lake (former pit mine). You also get a view over Pine Creek and can see trees as far as eyes can see. It was an absolutely stunning place for sunset with the sky and forest reflecting in the lake. Could also hear the birds and could spot a few birds of prey and bats. There's also some information about the history of the mine and you can see down some pits. They have a raised viewing platform but trees block much of the view of the lake so it's better just to walk to the edge of the hill.

Pine Creek is the only original mining town remaining in the Top End from the gold rush era of the 1870s, and it's National Trust Museum building is the oldest surviving prefabricated structure in the Northern Territory. Originally the home of the mining warden in Burrundie, the building was moved to Pine Creek in 1913. Over the years it served many purposes, including as a doctors residence, clinic, dispensary, military hospital, and post office and exchange. Today the building houses the National Trust museum and Victoria-Daly Regional Council library. Look through the building to find out more about the gold rush, local Chinese history, buffalo hunters and the Overland Telegraph Line.
The volunteer staff at this museum are old bushie veterans, full of 'tall' stories that entertain the sometimes gullible travelling public. It is worth listening to them for an hour or so of outback bull s**t. The museum is also well worth a visit with many artefacts of days well gone by and never to return. Don't miss it.
