After visiting the Phimai temple, go over to the even less visited museum. With its water and trees it is a serene venue for these beautiful remnants of a more spiritual time. The carved lintels, delicate beads, and nagas speak to us with a voice that we can scarcely understand today unless we stop and listen carefully. The broken statue of King Jayavarman VII is particularly moving. Such a great monarch, and he did not portray himself as a warrior or glorious ruler -- only a simple pose of meditation. We can all learn from Jayavarman VII.

In Isan town of PhiMai you will find this historical site with a temple complex from the Khmer period. It is very nice and well kept. Also quiet, at least when we were there so the visit is very relaxed. Entrance fee is 100 baht for foreigners and 20 baht for Thai nationals. There is parking space at the entrance. A visit will take just over one hour, but is well worth doing.

Just try to imagine a banyan tree, only one, 350 years old, a little more than 3 200 m2 (35 000 square feet) under which you can walk at a cool temperature.... quite an incredible tree, with squirrels, dragons flies, a small temple.... Really nice and quiet place. A few kilometers after the museum. Beware of your head, I still feel a little pain after I hit a low tree branch!
