The nice part was that we were on a road trip and doing the roadside attractions and didn't arrive until 1am. We were still able to get out and explore. I had to use the bathroom, but the outhouse isn't open. Ha ha! There are some newspaper articles on a board and a nice little sitting area so it was worth the stop.

We really enjoyed this side trip on our way through Illinois. Off the beaten path but worth the time. Very interesting and well maintained. There are people in period costumes. There are animals to see and a nice little museum. Admission is free. Donations are suggested.

Aikman Wildlife Adventure is a drive through and walk through wildlife sanctuary in Arcola, Illinois. Our missions is to provide the highest quality of life possible to all wildlife in need, while maintaining a family friendly environment through interaction, education, conservation and by creating an experience of a lifetime. We are open Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10-5 and Sunday from 12-4.
Though not a full-fledged zoo, this park has a plethora of animals and birds, exotic, unusual and interesting. We first chose the drive through option. It is about a mile at a slow pace, and you are right there with the animals- zebras, llama, bison, watusi steers, water buffalo, horses, miniature donkeys and horses, elk, ornx, addax, camel, emu, peacocks, geese.... We stopped to watch staff feeding the animals.
We then decided to go through the walking section for another fee. There we saw smaller animals such as porcupines, potbelly pigs, hares, tortoise, pigmy goats, hyenas and more.
A great low key spot to see some exotic nature in central Illinois. Looks like they intend to keep expanding.

How does the women's picture represent this course? Almost didn't stop to play, figuring it was a cheesy. As it turned out, it's a decent place. Seemed to be heavily played by locals. Getting in a fast round could be problematic depending on when you get there. The red tees are listed on the scorecard as 'ladies' tees. What! Are low handicap women not allowed to play from back tees? Not sure about that. Good fun round of golf for the dollar.

This small regional theater (seats 50) right off the square has been providing excellent productions for over 25 years. (See their website)
Local talent doing good theater. The "CAT" will do works by local authors along with those of Pulitzer Prize winners and the greats such as Shakespeare. Prices are reasonable which makes these works available to everyone. If you are in town and there is a show going on, highly recommend an evening of fine entertainment. Snacks are sold in the lobby along with coffee mugs to use as you sit and read your plays or books.

I was in the Charleston, IL area and was looking for things to do during the day. I found Jackson Avenue among thr countless other bars and antique stores, and decided to check it out. Their House Blend coffee was fantastic! The small coffee shop is attached to a boutique, and walking straight back through a small hallway brings you into an unexpected small concert area with a stage, tables and couches. This coffeehouse/venue/boutique neighbor is a stop you need to make!
