My husband and I happened upon this site while looking for things to do in the area. We were so impressed with the solumn dignity of the presentation. My husand is a Viet Nam veteran and was deeply touched. The memorial is well thought out and well presented, and I give huge thanks to those who made it happen. The outside area is remarkable, serene, and touching. I appreciate the computer terminals that help visitors locate the names of those on the wall panels. We thought the building was unrelated or closed, but ventured inside. The small memorabelia area is awesome in its simplicity and for personal level of the items. As I understand it, any momento left at the wall, is rescued from the weather and put on display inside the museum. There is all manner of things that once belonged to the fallen soldier, tributes to the soldiers, and items that may have been important to the loved one. Full beer cans were a poplular item. Everything was so personal, one may feel like an intruder, but you also feel the families' pain. There is another Middle East Conflicts memorial in Marseilles. This one for Illinois's fallen soldiers. It much less showy, but also meaningful and a labor of love for the volunteers who give their time to make it a reality. In Illini state park, follow the road to the very end, near the lock. There are 240 some new oak trees planted in memory of our fallen soldiers, plus a memorial. We were very touched.
