The dam has a fantastic nightly laser light show during the summer.
If you're in the area you should not miss this spectacle. A gargantuan engineering feat. An amazing accomplishment that could not have happened without Franklin D. Roosevelt and the W.P.A. The project provided jobs during the depression, power to the Northwest and beyond, and irrigation to what is now some of the finest farmland in America. The visitor center is small but very informative and does detail the unfortunate side-effect of the displacement of hundreds of Native Americans who still have not been fully compensated for their losses.

We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful campground at Steamboat. All paved sites, beautiful grassed areas, clean metal picnic tables and paved bike paths through the park. As we visited in August, I would say the only negative was that water levels dropped significantly in the lake due to irrigation. Banks Lake is an irrigation lake. Also due to water levels and heat ? we found the water very weedy, which was not great for swimming. Water temperatures were wonderfully warm, beaches are sandy and all around the lake. A true boaters paradise!

Mr. Gehrke has passed but Electric City has moved his folk art to a fenced-in area in the parking lot of North Dam Park. There are too many pieces here to count, all unique. Well worth a quick stop to appreciate someone's life work.

We camped at the well-maintained Fort Spokane campground, which caters to fisherman during certain times of year and boaters during the hot summer. Definitely a water- oriented place. That said. It's an easy walk to historic Fort Spokane, where we received a personal lecture from the NPS ranger (there was no one else there). Worth a half hour to an hour of your time.

The Dam is just huge. Almost a mile long. Very impressive.
On the other hand, it is about the only interesting thing in the area (large area that is...).
The nightly laser show lasts about half an hour and is well worth a visit, explaining the history of the dam and ist surroundings.
