Definitely a destination for Rte 66 folks like ourselves. The old clock near the mural was cool too. Galena also offers the restored Kan-O-Tex service station and we saw a Texaco station being refurbished as well. Great to see! Quite a few lunch restaurants 'downtown'. An enjoyable stop for sure. Street parking was plentiful during the week. A few Galena photos below in close proximity to the mural.

My kid really enjoyed seeing Mater when she was younger and we still enjoy eating at the little restaurant that Mater sits beside now. It is fun for people of all ages. I would recommend to others

I enjoy small topical museums so I had to stop at this one, which features Galena history and mining. I was not disappointed. Artifacts and exhibits were well-arranged, with signage to put items in context. One room is full of beautiful aggregates, nicely labeled. I was interested in the telephone history display and the antique cars. Many other artifacts from the late 19th century to the 1950s were present. Of course there was plenty of mining equipment with informative labels. The model of a mining operation with identifying/explanatory labels for each component was particularly informative. It was also fun - I enjoy small scale dioramas. There were also some gorgeous oil paintings of mining structures, painted by area artist Carole Riley. These paintings have been on display at the Smithsonian. The volunteer on duty was very friendly and welcoming; very willing to talk about the exhibits and about area mining history; and able to suggest, and give directions to lesser known mining sites. Parking next to museum. Free but donations are welcome. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. There is a very nice diner across the street, if you arrive at noon (Central)

If you love Route 66 or are doing a Route 66 trip, this is a must see. You will find plenty of photography opportunities. If the shop is open and Linda is there, take time to talk to her, she is a wealth of knowledge. She is so much fun and will give you the history of the area, will tell you about the actor's who voiced some of the characters in the Cars movie and some have signed pieces of the cars. Step inside and check out the gift shop and little diner. We had so much fun with our visit to Cars on the Route.
