Fort Benton is a city in and the county seat of Chouteau County, Montana, United States. Established in 1846, a full generation before the U.S. Civil War, Fort Benton is one of the oldest settlements in the American West; in contrast, many other places—including large cities today—were settled in the late 1860s, 1870s, or 1880s. The city's waterfront area, the most important aspect of its 19th-century growth, was designated the Fort Benton Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, in 1961.

We were really impressed by the staff - really helpful. For example, they told us where to go to get the best photograph/view of the River Missouri, which I really appreciated. The museum itself had some nice artefacts and displays, and an interesting 20 minute documentary video. Worth visiting.

Spent 3 days in Fort Benton and area. The museums do an amazing job of telling the history of the area and the whiskey/fur trades up into Canada.
Agriculture museum is also a gem. A real walk through time with great displays of antique equipment and storytelling of life in the early 1900s.
Buy the two day admission which gives you entrance to the Fort, the Ag Museum and the Missouri River National Monument. You won't regret the price or the time you spend in Fort Benton.
It even kept our 12 and 15 year olds' interest!

This is a replacement for the original bridge but still old. It used to be a toll bridge but today you can cross it but no further--the end is fenced off. It's a good view of the Missouri where steamboats used to run.

Don't miss this museum. We spent a leisurely Saturday strolling the fort and museums in town. This particular museum is huge and if you were really interested in agriculture could be a destination just for that reason. I'm not but still found it great. The 1920s village was well done and fun to walk around. Amazing museum for such a small town.

Has to go by the Missouri River to really appreciate them. Was not aware of their existence until I go there.

A large rock located on the Missouri River.
A brown igneous intrusion at the edge of the Missouri River that contrast with the white cliffs nearby.
