We spent quite a few hours here on a hot day and it was fantastic. We took a picnic but they also have a kiosk with some hot food, cold drinks, lollies, snow cones and icecreams. Lap pools, diving board and a shallow pool were all well maintained and clean as well as the bathrooms/changing facilities. Plenty of shady areas, lounge chairs and umbrellas. The only disappointing thing was the infant pool was not turned on which meant we didn’t have a suitable pool for our 1 & 3 year old unless they were being carried (we didn’t have floaties with us). Staff were all lovely.

over 1000 Aboriginal rock images.
So pleased we took this drive! From Cobar we travelled about 30km west to the turn off to Mt Grenfell another 33km dirtroad which was it self an interesting drive with many different birds spotted along the way! There is a picnic site with amenities at the parking site. The Artsite itself is a well marked walk for confident walkers the pathway is rocky and also requires walking over large rock areas although I'm not a copentent hiker I managed with a very spots where I was guided by my hubby to get the footing safe. The artsite is quite interesting to see and very spiritual gives you a good sense of how the aborigines would have lived. We did not attempt the walk further to Mt Grenfell loop as it was very rocky without a clear path or direction where to walk ( good hiking boots would be required to walk past the 3rd artsite.) We did not attempt any further walking and went back the same way.

We stayed in Cobar overnight and as we left saw the directions to the lookout. It’s only a short detour off the main road. It’s well worth the visit, the entrance road is bitumen so the access is easy. The entrance to the lookout is behind the water tank, whilst it’s all fenced for safety it provides great views in to the deep pit and the town in the background. The lookout is relatively high so you also get fantastic 360 views of the surrounding bush.

An interesting walk through some old mining industry machinery. On the main road and only a short distance from the centre of town.

Make sure you call into the Cobar Visitor's Centre in town, The lady was very friendly and helpful and suggested we grab lunch from town and take it to The Newey and eat down there. She said if we were lucky we might see some turtles on the waters edge. So I was loving this idea already. We grabbed lunch in town and then drove a short drive from town. The spot was perfect nice shady trees and a quiet spot to have some lunch while watching the water. As we were having lunch we started to see some turtles pop their heads up. If you don't move around alot you can see them clearly as they make their way around the reeds in the water. And a bit of patience helps. This was a highlight of Cobar as it was not what I was expecting. It is free to enter the reserve and take your camera with you.
