Astonishing view! The cross is absolutely breathtaking. The peace you feel while up there is like no other. The volunteers were friendly and the gift shop had lots of goodies! It’s the perfect place for a family outing or to go sit and reflect alone.

Alto Vineyards is Southern Illinois' oldest, most award-winning winery nestled in the Shawnee National Forest. Enjoy beautiful views from the upstairs Vine Deck, do a tasting in the 5,000 square foot tasting room, or tour the 9 acres of grapevines - perfect for weddings, a party rental, or a weekend visit! Offering around 20 wines, a beer and lunch menu, free wifi and more, visit Alto on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail on Highway 127 in Alto Pass, just 20 minutes from Carbondale. Open daily.
One of my favorite wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail! Alto has a great wine list, with over 20 wines to choose from, mostly made from french-american hybrid grapes grown in the Shawnee Hills AVA. The tasting room is large and the staff is friendly. There is a large patio and upper deck to enjoy the views, as well as many other places to sit with more privacy. You can bring in your own food. They even have a self-guided walking tour through the vineyard. Highly recommended!

Always a great time. The weather was perfect and everyone in Southern Illinois was out! The grandkids love this place petting and feeding the goats, picking flowers and enjoying being outside! Always fresh apples (fall) peaches in the summer. We try and get by there at least once each season!!

We stumbled across Von Jakob after doing a few wineries along the trail. We were excited because this place also was a brewery too! WE WISH WE WENT HERE FIRST BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE STATED ALL DAY!! Angie and Eric were absolutely amazing. The place was so clean. They had an amazing sitting room where the wine and beer counters were. The large banquet hall was so nice and the outside area will be so cool when the weather gets better. Of the 4 stops we made, this place had my favorite wines AND the fresh brewed beer was great. This is a great place for people who want a variety, beer and wine. They are prepping to expand and we can’t wait to go back and stay at the bed and breakfast! THIS STOP IS A MUST ON THE WINE TRAIL!!
