La Galleria Nuove Forme d'Arte

The gallery has been operating for about 30 years in the production of artistic ceramics and as 700 years ago, only creates ceramics made and hand painted. This shop is a little jewel in the commercial landscape of Montelupo. The owner Salvatore Mirenda, creates objects with the ancient technique of the lathe, the activity that takes place over 35 years, after he inherited from his father Sebastian, a master potter. Salvatore continues the family tradition of working with clay, enriching it with new shapes and decorations. Our production is not limited to the reproduction of classical works, but adds that touch of creativity, originality and quality that distinguishes our work. The gallery offers the opportunity 'to order and buy directly from the factory or via email.

I phoned a few times to tell them that I would be arriving by car and inquire if in the aftermath of the Christmas week that the store would be open. Elisabetta, the owner, assured me that they would be open. And they were. Upon arrival, I am met by Elisabetta and her son Matteo whose eyes grew wider and their smiles peaked when I entered with my partner. They asked us the right questions, showed us the creations both live and on the computer that we would consider. They will custom any size, color, shape. It was a pleasure to work with them both. We ordered a 60 cm. round plate for over our fireplace. It will be created, fired, painted and glazed by expert craftspeople in the next few weeks. Wow! What great service! Would I visit and buy from them again? Yes and with no hesitations. Would I recommend them to others? Yes of course!

Museo Archeologico di Montelupo

INAUGURATED IN 2007 IN THE FORMER COMPLEX OF SAN QUIRICO AND SANTA LUCIA, THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ITS KIND AT A NATIONAL LEVEL, FOR THE QUANTITY OF FINDS AND FOR THE DIVERSIFICATION IN THE TYPE OF RESEARCH. Due to its history, the exhibition center has a peculiar physiognomy that distinguishes it from most of the civic museums of Tuscany and other Italian regions, in terms of its marked geographical extension and its important chronology of reference. In fact, it displays remains from over 160 prehistoric stations, the protohistoric finds of the Valdarno hut settlements, the first traces of the population and of the Etruscan centers on the high ground, the Roman colonization and the consequent radical transformations imprinted on the territory, the long transition to the Middle Ages and the birth of new settlements that supported the miracle of Renaissance Florence.

Museo della Ceramica

The Ceramics Museum boasts a museum itinerary that is divided into two floors. It includes a collection of ceramic works ranging from the end of the thirteenth to the eighteenth century, chosen from the over 5,550 contained in the warehouses. The corridors of both floors offer a chronological reconstruction of the history of ceramic art and a path for the blind with tactile tiles and Braille alphabet captions. The eight rooms, on the other hand, deal with eight specific themes: the medieval and Renaissance canteen, excavations, the shop, collecting, exports, clients, the pharmacy and the room of animals and flowers, entirely dedicated to children. The museum also has a path for children with interactive activities suitable for all ages. Also part of the collection are some majolicas resulting from donations or acquisitions. An example is the famous Rosso di Montelupo (exhibited in the room dedicated to collecting), a basin dated 1509 already in the Rothschild collection in Paris.

This is a very specialized museum, but very interesting and educational. The history of Montelupo ceramics, as well as the evolution of tuscan ceramics is well explained. It is a small museum, but if you like ceramics, you will be glad you went.
