The glowing Mosquito Bay is a vision of bizarre beauty. Thanks to a bioluminescent microorganism, the water is a cool electric blue, looking somewhat like a fantastical sci-fi lagoon. Kayak or hop into a clear-bottomed pontoon boat to glide along the neon waters. Swimmers and snorkelers will adore the pristine, undeveloped beaches. Keep an eye out for the playful feral horses that gallop along the dunes, or visit the stately ceiba tree that’s been keeping watch over the highland for three centuries.

Crab Island is the first rum distillery in Vieques.
Iván, owner/distiller of Crab Island Rum has it all going on! He can explain all of the nuances if his own runs and the rum business (and how other get away with selling rum made elsewhere with a PR label, what?!). He is the real deal! He has studied the process, spent years creating his recipes and put his sweat, blood and tears into this business. The end product is pretty good tasting rum! He has a couple of flavored rims, which are made from all natural products. The orange infused rum is not an artificial flavor, nor is the coffee rum. Both excellent. His other two runs are 1 year old. He has rum in the barrel, my guess is that before too long he will be developing a longer aged rum. That will be something to look forward to. :) Support locals, spend a little more $ for a fine product and a true entrepreneurship!

As of 1845, the Fuerte Conde de Mirasol Museum was one of the last military works built in the Americas by the hands of enslaved commanders of the Spanish Crown. Initially, the Spanish militia stayed in the fort and was later used as a prison until 1940. The building was restored between 1989 and 1991 to become the Museum of Art and History and the Historical Archive of Vieques. It exhibits archaeological and historical artifacts and artistic works. For details and visits call 787-741-1717. It is located in the barriada Fuerte, highway PR-989.
I was amazingly surprised by the amazing work by local artist Carlos Damian Gil Rivera in the ruined walls of the fort which is also a museum! He explained to me that bringing “Love, Light and Life” to “abandoned” places in this case (ruined by Hurricane Maria with water leaks etc) is his passion! He started in 2016 bringing peace and love to the island of Vieques as a volunteer around 2003 and started painting his murals in 2016, a couple of years after he decided to move here! He asked to use the “ruined” part of the Museum at the Fort as his workshop so that the island could have art, inspiration and motivation to continue, specially looking to finish by June 22, 2018 when the people of Vieques celebrate their annual Cultural Festival at the Fort with local art, music, food, artisans, and dancing! Come and enjoy the amazing views from the Fort, get to know a little about the history of Vieques from the museum part, see some of th murals by famous local artists Carlos Gil (Artby Carlos Gil on Facebook) and try to visit the only Community Radio Station in Vieques also at the Fort! They also have the Archives of Vieques at the Fort! And remember to stop by their store to get some art, book or t-shirt! Enjoy!
