Kite surfers, paragliders and deep-sea fishermen flock to windswept La Morne, a small village on the southwest side of Mauritius. Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a dramatic basaltic rock peak dotted with caves that once harbored runaway slaves, presides over luxury resorts and a wide beach widely regarded as the best on the island. Throw in a shimmering turquoise lagoon and gorgeous sunsets and calling the town "paradise" doesn't seem like a cliché.

. Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.
We had a fantastic morning climbing this amazing mountain, especially given its links to slavery and the stronghold it became for escapee slaves. Make sure you take a few minutes to appreciate the little makeshift village at the bottom too. My husband was apprehensive of climbing the mountain without a guide, but I can assure anyone wanting to take on La Morne that you can absolutely do it on your own. The paths are well travelled and easy to navigate. They do become narrower and steeper towards the top once you pass the ‘Warning’ sign. There are also plenty of other walkers to know you are going in the right direction. Once you pass the sign do prepared for a steep ascent and slight bit of rock climbing/scrambling. As dangerous as it looks, as long as you take your time you’ll make it to the top. While we were trekking we saw multiple children climbing as well as those wearing slightly less suited footwear. Our view from the top was somewhat hindered by the clouds, but it was still a great morning out all the same. Take plenty of water and maybe some lunch to have at the top too. It took us about 3 hours to go up and down. A must activity for anyone loving the outdoors!

The most exciting golf experience in Mauritius Unforgettable is the only word to describe a round of golf on the course at Paradis. Set against the backdrop of majestic mountains, the fairways and greens curl along the shoreline of a spectacular bay. The claim that this is one of the most beautiful golf courses in Mauritius is a valid one. Built within the resort's grounds, the 18-hole Par 72 golf course stretches along 5,924 metres between the iconic Morne mountain and the crystal-clear lagoon of the Morne peninsula. Much of the creative design of the bunkers and fairways is attributable to international golf legend Tony Johnstone who has spent several years playing the course through its many evolutionary stages.

In the heart of the Morne Brabant mountain which counts as part of UNESCO's World Heritage, a team of experienced professionals from the "Haras du Morne" offers to take you on a horse trip or by carriage, to discover exceptional landscapes.Arriving at Le Morne, you will climb this mythical mountain at your horse’s easy pace, soon to admire the breathtaking 360° view. To the North lies the Benitiers islands and to the South Fourneau Island, both circled by the endless magical lagoon. All around you, the forest stretches, astonishing and almost unreal for its lush green and calmness.Off the beaten tracks, you should be lucky enough to see the stags and get close to them, thanks to the animal link established over the years between your horse and these wild animals. After this wonderful experience, do not miss the ride along the water line, and enjoy the splashing in the waves with your horse. Then, after you have unsaddled, experience the unreal and refreshing feeling when swimming in the warm waters with your horse! These animals, like many others, are natural swimmers. The horses from the Haras du Morne particularly appreciate their swim, almost daily. If you have a camera, one of the guides from the Haras du Morne will happily take snapshots of these rare and valuable moments...
Second time back to Mauritius, could not resist to the temptation to do that again, after seeing those beautiful horses passing by on the beach at Le Morne. Contacted Dorothy almost last minute, she found a place for a gallop on the beach, with the best guide ever (same one I got last year, by chance, who added a lot to the enjoyment of the experience). If you are true horse lovers, and love riding in beautiful places, you can't miss this one. The experience starts with a test on your actual abilities in horse riding (trot and gallop), and ends with a bath (bareback) at the lagoon. Unforgivable. Horses are clearly well taken care, they do enjoy bathing; harness is in such a good condition that I have rarely seen around in similar facilities, including in Italy. They provide riding equipment if you need (helmets and chaps or boots). Staff really nice, even all the times I stopped them on the beach to take pictures to horses. No doubt I will be back again.

Highly recommend using Company Vitamin Sea to take inclusive swimming with Dolphins and snorkelling at Crystal Rock. You won’t get here any other way than by boat unless you are staying at the exclusive beach resort opposite.
