An excellent day out for a Sunday. If you stay in Bangalore then you must take a family outing for a half a day or full day. Its about 60km Marathahhali. Although, you can take the new airport road to reach here, I suggest you to take the Whitefield-kadugodi-Buddhigere-Devanhalli road. The route is through local villages and quite scenic. If you want to have a long-drive experience, you can stop over at Nandi Upachar(this is at Nandi Hills junction on NH7) on the way for a mouth watering breakfast and march further. About the temple itself. The temple architecture is beautiful and has lot of beautiful carvings. It has a big pond inside the campus. You can dip your legs in to it and experience foot massage as the small fishes gather near your feet and try to eat the dirt. The temple has huge lawn. You may carry your food and have it there. Just be bit careful with monkeys. If seeing just one site is not enough then visit Devanhalli Fort as well. Nothing much to do there but adds a tick mark in your places visited.

Night trek at Skandagiri, reaching the peak to view the Sunrise, is an amazing experience. Starting at around 3:30am from the foothill, looking for where to put your next step in the torchlight, and climbing sometimes easy to sometimes very difficult rocks, completes the magic. While it’s mentioned as moderate difficulty, many a times it seemed quite difficult for non-regular trekker. Do practice caution if it’s drizzling or raining, as loose sand & rocks get slippery. It’s worth all the trouble, when you reach the peak while it’s still dark, and then watch the sky changing the colors before it culminates Sun rising in the horizon. With the exhaustion of trek and the chill in wind, nothing you’d enjoy more than a cup of tea in hand with gaze fixed eastwards (carry the flask yourself :-)). Summary, must visit for trekking enthusiasts.
