My husband and I have been visiting Newfoundland in July for many years and this is one of our favorite stops. The first time we visited, we were drawn in by the well preserved light green building with the colorful bunting blowing in the breeze. Inside this historical house is the museum named for Dr. Henry Payne who served his community for many years as a teacher and also was active in the church. You can see furniture and appliances and utensils of the period as well as several wonders--a 700 year old walrus skull and the axe used in the double axe murders of 1809. We didn't realize the significance of the axe until later when we saw the play The Double Axe Murders at Gros Morne Theater and of course we had to go back again to see the axe. There are also beautiful hand made hooked mats, quilts, knitted woolen mitts and socks. You'll also learn the role of women in those times. Thoroughly worth the time to visit. And please talk to the curator to hear stories of the items and times.
